McCord Gallery & Cultural Center, Board of Directors

The mission of the McCord Gallery & Cultural Center is to preserve the historic McCord House built in 1834 as a learning center for the arts and cultural history while showcasing the artwork of local and regional artists. Palos Park, known as an artist colony in the early 20th century, remains home to many artists.  McCord has become a unique gathering place where artists exhibit their work, share their ideas, and participate in classes that encourage their growth. As a welcoming home for the arts, McCord offers people of all ages access to free art exhibitions, provides art and music programs, and is a venue to enjoy cultural events. Many express how grateful they are for such a supportive environment. With students coming from over 15 surrounding towns, it has become apparent that McCord is filling a great need for art classes and cultural events, not only in Palos Park, but also in the entire southwest suburban area.
McCord’s Outreach Program has expanded offerings to members of the community who have less access to venues where they can express themselves artistically. Classes for the developmentally disabled clients of Park Lawn focus on art while helping students develop fine motor skills and participate in the decision-making process. In addition, McCord offers individual art instruction for those living with Alzheimer’s

McCord’s artistic programs include daily art classes, workshops, exhibits, concerts, private music lessons, and cultural events. McCord is truly a welcoming home for the arts and a focal point for cultural activity in the community.
These programs support local artists by giving them opportunities to develop their artistic skills through daily classes as well as workshops that offer exposure to new mediums. The gallery allows artists to exhibit and sell their works. McCord has partnered with other arts organizations to present more opportunities to artists. Including exhibits with the Illinois Watercolor Society, Chicago’s Palette & Chisel, and Natures Artists Guild of the Morton Arboretum.  During the past year over 190 Illinois artists have exhibited their work at McCord. Our annual Holiday Shoppe provides a space for artisans to offer one-of-a-kind gifts and is open to the public.
In addition, McCord features concerts giving opportunities to musicians and performing artists to share their talents and entertain the community. Included are a variety of concerts from bands like the Banjo Buddies, and Dixieland Jazz Band to the soulful sound of the Fred Johnson Trio, to the Cajun music of the Magnolia Sisters as well as “Big Dog” Mercer Blues & Rock Band and Dana Maragos, Folk Singer & Song Writer.
The continued growth of our programs allows us to expand our reach in the community and surrounding suburbs.

Our annual fundraiser:
This year we are celebrating our 20th year!
We have grown from just the McCord House, where we squeezed in art and music students, and small art shows beginning in 2004, to adding the 4000 square foot Anderson Annex addition in 2016. The addition of the gallery space and classroom has given us the ability to provide many more classes and exhibits.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization McCord holds various fundraising events throughout the year. But it is our “For Love of the Arts” Annual Gala that provides the major funding needed to keep us moving forward and serving the community.
This year’s theme, Tapestry…McCord Woven in Time. McCord’s past and present achievements have been woven into a rich colorful Tapestry that will shine on into the future!

The gala will be held on October 5, 2024 at the Midlothian Country Club.
