From Persimmon Ridge to the Football Field

Keith Eckloff and his family found themselves enchanted by the tranquil allure of Persimmon Ridge, a neighborhood that harmoniously blends nature with modern living. The move, inspired by a yearning for picturesque views and open spaces, marked a significant change from their former home in the bustling Murray Hill neighborhood. It was during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic that the Eckloffs decided to explore new horizons, spending hours on Zillow until they discovered their dream home.

Keith's wife, Susan, an occupational therapist and Louisville native, was ready to move back to her hometown. But they were immediately captivated by Persimmon Ridge's emphasis on nature. They moved in 2020, drawn not only by the scenery but also by the sense of community the neighborhood offers. Their two daughters, Claire and Ashley, are now in college, and their Golden Mountain Doodle, Sulley, has a playground, albeit one he’s a bit nervous to explore at night due to the wildlife.

Keith's journey to Persimmon Ridge is part of a larger story of transformation and dedication. In December, he was appointed the new head coach of DuPont Manual High School’s football team, embarking on his first season with the team. His coaching career, which began in 2004, is rooted in a significant career shift from his former life as a divorce attorney in Washington, D.C. The demanding 70-80 hour work weeks left him yearning for a change. Coaching a church football team in Maryland ignited his passion for the sport, and his wife’s insightful question, “How do we make the thing that brings you joy a job?” led him to pursue high school coaching and teaching full-time.

Keith's academic journey brought him to the University of the Cumberlands, where he earned a Master’s degree in teaching in 2013. His coaching resume includes tenures at Ballard, Seneca, and Male High Schools, with his most recent position as head coach at Seneca, where he served for five years before seeking a new challenge with DuPont Manual.

The Manual football team has a rich history but has struggled to break into the top five in recent years, and consistently losing their rivalry games against Male High School. Keith is eager to change that narrative. “I get to deal with high achievers all day long. Which is awesome. They are invested in their own success,” he says, reflecting on his new role. He will also be teaching Credit Recovery at Manual starting in the fall of 2024, assisting students during independent learning time to earn required credits for graduation.

The Eckloffs have seamlessly integrated into the Louisville community, frequently exploring the city's diverse offerings. They recently dined at Malone’s, relishing the steaks and atmosphere, and have a particular fondness for Cask, known for its impressive bourbon selection. They are also active members of the St. Patrick’s parish, attending weekly.

As the new football season approaches, Keith is excited to see the team's personality develop over the summer. “Every team has its own personality. That personality is formed over the summer as we are together all day 5-6 days a week,” he explains. With structured programs emphasizing strength, flexibility, and mobility, Keith is determined to ensure his team remains competitive.

Susan, ever supportive, is thrilled to be part of this new chapter. “She’s one of our biggest fans,” Keith says with a smile. As they look forward to the first game on August 23rd at Central High School, the Eckloffs are optimistic about the future, both on and off the field.
