Mastering the Mental Game: Karl Nitz’s Passion for Sports Psychology

Phillips Creek Ranch resident Karl Nitz has dedicated his career to helping athletes and individuals break through mental barriers to achieve peak performance. With a deep understanding of sports psychology and mental toughness, Karl works with clients to cultivate a winning mindset, navigate adversity, and push past the interferences that often hold them back from reaching their goals.
Karl’s passion for sports psychology began on the golf course. A conversation with a neighbor who had played in mini-tour golf events opened his eyes to the connection between self-talk and performance. Struggling with his own mental game, Karl realized that his thoughts—especially those of doubt and failure—were directly influencing his results. This early revelation led him down a path of studying psychology, ultimately earning a BA from the University of Kansas and later a Master’s in Social Work from Washburn University. His education and experience as a mental health counselor further fueled his interest in helping athletes overcome sports performance anxiety.
Now, as the founder of Upper Limits Sports Performance Coaching, Karl specializes in equipping athletes with tools to manage anxiety, boost confidence, and develop resilience. He finds great fulfillment in seeing his clients—whether golfers, soccer players, or football kickers—break free from the fears that have held them back and reach new heights in their performance.
Karl and his wife, Stacy, moved to Phillips Creek Ranch in 2019 from Salina, Kansas. They were drawn to Texas for the competitive sports opportunities available to their two sons, Hayden and Harrison. Hayden, now 20, plays football as a field goal kicker at Southern Arkansas University, while Harrison, 18, recently signed with the University of North Carolina at Asheville to continue his soccer career after playing for Reedy High School and the Dallas Texans ECNL team. Through their sports journeys, Karl has been able to share his expertise, helping them navigate injuries, coaching challenges, and the high expectations that come with competitive athletics.
Karl encourages parents and athletes seeking mental coaching to reach out to Upper Limits Sports Performance Coaching to learn how mindset training can enhance performance both in sports and in life.
