Back to the Books!

September means back to the books, not only for students but for all ages. The inevitable cooler weather will call us back indoors to spend more time with a good read.

Recently I sat down with Katie Mannix at her store, Book Love, to get her suggestions for non-fiction books that are her personal preference.  These are her suggestions, given with enthusiasm.

HISTORY OF SOUND by Ben Shattuck

Nathaniel Philbrick, author of The Mayflower wrote:
'"The History of Sound is much more than a stunning short story collection, the best I've read in decades. It's a seductive cluster of interweaving narratives that will keep you turning the pages even as you savor each story's heart and wit. Ben Shattuck writes about music, painting, history, and grace."

SIX WALKS IN FOOTSTEPS OF HENRY DAVID THOREAU-
By Ben Shattuck

Another book by the local author that was a New Yorker Best Seller 2022.

On an autumn day in 1849, Henry David Thoreau stepped out his front door to walk the beaches of Cape Cod. Over a century and a half later, author, Ben Shattuck does the same. With just a loaf of bread, a hunk of cheese, and a notebook, Shattuck sets out to retrace Thoreau's path through the Cape outer beaches to the tip of Provincetown.

FROSTBITE by Nicola Twilley

"The author, a science journalist, tells the fascinating story of the history of refrigeration. She tracks its effects on eating habits, family life, and much more. Along the way, she skillfully introduces us to the people who helped make refrigeration a key feature everyday life. "  - Wall St. Journal

THE RIDE OF HER LIFE: TRUE STORY OF A WOMAN, HER HORSE, AND THEIR LAST CHANCE JOURNEY ACROSS AMERICA by Elizabeth Letts

In 1954, 63-year-old Maine farmer, Annie Wilkins embarked on an important journey. She had no money, no family, and she had just lost her farm, when her doctor told her that she had only two more years to live. She always wanted to see the Pacific Oceanbefore she died. In Mid-November, she sets off with an off cast horse named Tarzan, along with her faithful mutt, no map, but a strong belief that the Americans she will meet along the way will treat them with kindness.

This story will make you feel that you are taking the trip with them.
