Horsetooth Tavern | Come For The Music; Stay For The Food!

“We are so incredibly proud to say that the Horsetooth Tavern is now open, and it’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of,” said Donovan Isaacs, Owner of Horsetooth Tavern. “We envisioned a place that offers families, friends, and visitors a comfortable place with an incredible variety of music and great food. That’s just what we’ve built; seeing it come to life is amazing. We’re here, we’re open, and we’re ready for you.”

In June 2024, Donovan and Dawn Isaacs opened Horsetooth Tavern directly across from Inlet Bay. It’s an indoor-outdoor concept featuring live music from two stages, locally sourced American-style food, and great service. It’s worth the drive to enjoy the food and the view.

Donovan grew up in Minnesota. In 1994, when he was a young adult, he drove to Colorado on his motorcycle to visit his cousin. “My first day in the state, I hiked Horsetooth Rock. I absolutely fell in love, and I’ve been here ever since,” he said with a warm laugh.

As a skilled woodworker with a Midwestern work ethic, Donovan has made a successful name for himself as the owner and operator of Lomax Windows & Door Co. His team provides restoration, sales, and installation services for homes and businesses across the region.

Dawn grew up in the Denver area. As a young adult, she worked in nearly every major music venue in Denver, learning the ins and outs of bartending and serving. She and Donovan have been married for twenty years and have three boys, Jackson (20), Noah (15), and Finn (14).

Nine years ago, Donovan and Dawn bought a horse property across from Donovan’s first love – Horsetooth Rock. Every day, Donovan would drive by the former restaurant, The Canyon Bar and Grill, dreaming of what could be.

“I grew up in bars and restaurants,” detailed Donovan. “My mom dropped out of school at 15, pregnant with me, and opened a live music roadhouse bar. My grandparents also ran a bar and restaurant, as well as my uncles and aunts. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to own my own bar and live music venue.”

Five years ago, that dream started to become a reality. The Isaacs purchased the building and began planning for the eventual opening of Horsetooth Tavern. The past tenant finished their lease and then Donovan got to work. “We worked on that building for a year and a half; it was the biggest undertaking of my life,” he said. “We gutted the whole thing and transformed it completely.”

Their hard work has paid off. The Tavern boasts an indoor stage, as well as an outdoor music venue, a beautiful patio, and great views all around. “We completely changed the vibe,” Donovan said. “It used to be a rundown biker bar, and now it’s a family-friendly place to bring your kids and your grandma.”

They have a full calendar of live music events, complete with a wide variety of styles. “You’re not going to come here and hear the same 20-some songs over and over anymore,” Donovan said. “Now, we have anything you can want – from country to jazz to blues – there’s something for everyone.” Since opening, people have flocked to The Tavern to enjoy live music in the Colorado sunshine.

The food has also received rave reviews. They offer a wide variety of soups, salads, burgers, steaks, and desserts, along with a full bar. Service is the restaurant's top priority, and the staff is well-trained. Donovan’s cousin, Jeremy, serves as the general manager. Jeremy grew up working in the same family establishments as Donovan.

“Our goal was to create a community-centered place where customers can relax and have a good time in a beautiful place,” added Donovan. “We’ve accomplished that and invite everyone to check it out.”
