Poudre Valley REA | A Cooperative Rooted in Community
Poudre Valley REA has been a cornerstone of Northern Colorado for 85 years, providing reliable electricity – and more – to its members while remaining deeply committed to the communities it serves.
Imagine what our geographical, economic, and political landscapes looked like 85 years ago. Envision life amid the Great Depression and on the brink of WWII. A life without electricity because the city-ran and investor-owned utilities deemed it too expensive to serve you power outside of town.
Facing a common challenge and driven by a shared vision of a brighter future, residents came together to form an electric cooperative. These pioneers formed Poudre Valley REA on October 2, 1939.
They built power lines, installed transformers, and constructed the grid that connected our remote corner of Colorado to the rest of the United States. The day the lights flicked on marked a significant step toward modernization and an enhanced quality of life.
What arose from a need for safe, reliable electricity evolved as the needs of our community evolved. But what has not changed, nor will it ever change, is the commitment they made to their members and community: to deliver the Poudre Valley Difference through the core pillars of safety, reliability, affordability, and service.
Today, they proudly serve electricity at the lowest rate in the state. They also offer a suite of resources, including access to local energy experts, online tools, a prepaid billing option, and a free mobile app to monitor energy consumption—empowering members to use energy in a way that aligns with their lifestyle or budget.
Their reliability metrics are ranked nationally in the top quartile, reflecting the continued efforts to provide always-on power while restoring outages quickly and safely.
From the employees who greet you at the front desk to those you see in the field and those working behind the scenes, they are dedicated to providing best-in-class service. You may even know or recognize a PVREA employee in your neighborhood, as they live and work right here in our area.
Here’s to continuing the legacy of service, innovation, and community engagement, illuminating the future for generations to come!
