Balancing Beats and Kicks: Katarina Holzner’s Journey in Karate and Music

Katarina Holzner, a 14-year-old student from Highland Meadows, is already standing out in sports and music. A dedicated athlete and passionate drummer, she balances her schoolwork with her interests and excels in everything she pursues.

Katarina has been practicing karate since she was six and quickly became a standout competitor. She holds the State Champion in Sparring title for the 13-14 Girls Beg/Intermediate division, where competitors put on full gear and engage in intense sparring, including head kicks and punches. In addition to her sparring success, she earned second place in traditional forms for the same age group, involving choreographed routines. For Katarina, karate offers much more than physical skill; it teaches leadership and discipline and provides a chance to make lasting friendships, all while having fun in competitive environments.

One of her favorite moments in karate was competing at Great Wolf Lodge, where she enjoyed the thrill of the sport in a fun, memorable setting.

Outside of karate, Katarina has another passion: playing the drums. She practices daily on her electric drum set and takes weekly lessons on a traditional set. She plays with friends and other musicians occasionally, showing her versatility and love for music.

When asked about advice for younger children who want to get involved in sports, Katarina says, “I would encourage them to focus on improvement rather than being the best.” She emphasizes that finding a group that makes you feel good and watching your progress makes sports enjoyable.

Looking ahead, Katarina plans to attend college, travel, and pursue a creative, artistic career. With her passion for karate and music, she’s destined to succeed in whatever path she chooses.
