Say Hello to the Carlsons
A Rich History in Rolling Hills
Meet Justin and Hanna Carlson. This happy couple resides here in Rolling Hills with their two children, Beau (3) and Maja (1 ½). Their spunky Golden Retriever (almost 4) makes their house a home with unconditional love and constant companionship.
Hanna, who was born and raised in Rolling Hills, is leaving a legacy as the third generation in the city and raising the fourth generation. Her grandparents moved here in the ‘60s and her parents found a home down the street. Now her parents live next door, providing free babysitting!
As for Justin, he was born in San Jose, California and moved to Palos Verdes in 1999, the summer prior to fifth grade. “He’s just as much a local as the rest of us,” explains Hanna. Justin attended Peninsula High School, followed by the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!), where he earned his degree in Business. Hanna attended Palos Verdes High School before trading in her sandals for cowboy boots and moving to Fort Worth, Texas, where she attended TCU. Go Frogs!
Hanna and Justin met through mutual friends and got married 5 years ago. Interestingly, Justin and Hanna share a birthday, February 28, although Justin is one year older.
The Carlsons decided to move back to Rolling Hills when they were ready to start a family. With spacious room to roam and explore the outdoors, it was the perfect place to live. They both have a deep appreciation for nature and wanted the same for their children and dog.
The Carlsons are very proud of their rich history in Rolling Hills and want to get to know everyone here. Hanna especially likes hearing stories about the “good ole days” and from people who knew her grandparents, France and Betsy Raine. “Through raising our kids here, we hope that one day, they too will want to raise the fifth generation in Rolling Hills," says Hanna.
Professions
When not enjoying life in the neighborhood, you can find Hanna and Justin at their day jobs. Hanna enjoys her career as a residential REALTOR® with The Kondo Group at Compass. Prior to residential real estate, she excelled in commercial real estate for 7 years in the South Bay. Her passion for real estate was built from within, as her father is an active agent, and his parents were both in real estate as well. She enjoys sharing her unique experience and personal knowledge of the South Bay with those new to the area.
Justin is the Sales Manager for a tablet PC manufacturing company located in Torrance and has worked there for 7 years.
Meet the Kids
Beau and Maja light up their parents’ world. Beau was born at the start of the pandemic, so the first few months of his life were spent with his family almost exclusively. He is getting to start PV Hills Nursery School this fall.
The kids are finally at an age where they can play together and it means so much to their parents to see them get along so well. Their birthdays are just close enough that they will be only one grade apart.
Family Fun
As a family, the Carlsons incorporate Swedish traditions, such as Midsommar, name days, fika, etc. and teach the kids Swedish with a lot of help from their Mormor (Grandmother). Hanna’s Mom is from Sweden, and while Justin looks to be 100% Italian, you’d be surprised to hear he’s 50% Swedish himself. This tight-knit family also enjoys their yearly trips to Sweden to visit family and friends.
In addition to incorporating Swedish traditions, the Carlsons also love hiking trails near their home and exploring other trails filled with blackberries, views, and more.
Popular Pastimes
In his free time, Justin is an avid fisherman. He especially enjoys fly and tenkara fishing in the high Sierra’s for trout and is an avid camper. When he isn’t tying his own flies, he enjoys cooking all sorts of barbecue on his smoker. Justin is also up in the wee hours of the morning to watch every Formula 1 race, practice and training.
Hanna is a proud and active member of the Women’s Community Club of Rolling Hills, and co-chaired the most recent community Tea Party. She is also involved in several committees under the Palos Verdes Peninsula Association of Realtors, with intent to strengthen their network of professionals, knowledge of their industry and leadership in their community.
Final Thoughts
We are honored to feature the Carlsons in this month’s issue. Be sure to say hello to them when you see them out and about. They would love to meet more friendly folks here in the community … and that means you!
