Renew Concierge Physical Therapy Doctors Gina Cherico and Laura Bracken
Dr. Gina Cherico, DPT, OCS
What's something that non-experts believe that they're actually mistaken about?
Laura: "Physical therapy doesn't work." Physical therapy works great if we're addressing the root issue of the problem with the correct treatments!
Gina: When people think about physical therapy, they think about traditional PT clinics that focus on exercise, but PT is so much more than exercise and stretching! We have several different manual therapy techniques that we can use to help get you out of pain.
What's the most commonly asked question you get?
Laura: "I didn't do anything different. How did this happen?"
Gina: “I have a bulging disc in my spine. Can PT still help me?”
How do you respond to that question?
Laura: In my experience, we all want to know how our pain came into existence so that we can NEVER do that again. The obvious injuries can be easy: I broke my toe when I dropped a heavy item on it. Easy solution: don't drop the heavy item. But what about those injuries that weren't there on Monday but popped up when you woke up on Tuesday? How do we address those issues? Likely the root cause of that Tuesday morning pain has been there for days, months, or even years. It was what we consider "sub-threshold". There are a lot of factors that can raise those sub-threshold dysfunctions above threshold, and it is different for everyone. When we identify dysfunctions and can treatment them appropriately, we can play offense against pain.
Gina: Of course! The research shows that the vast majority of the population has a herniated or bulging disc, but not everyone has pain. That means that the disc may not be the cause of your symptoms. We specialize in finding the root cause of your symptoms and fixing them, which allows you to live your life pain free.
What's another question people ask?
Gina: One thing that patients always ask is how long will it take to get better? Obviously, that’s very patient-dependent and the longer something has been going on, the longer it takes to fix.
Why what I do is important to a homeowner or resident?
Laura: Pain is one of the biggest limiters of function. If someone is in chronic pain, it dictates where they go, what they do, who they see, how they spend their time and energy. Chronic pain has a way of infesting every aspect of life. This does not have to be the norm.
Gina: Most people live their day-to-day lives in pain and that does not have to be the case. Even if you’ve had pain for 20 years, it’s very likely we can help get you out of pain and back to doing the things you love to do.
What are some "do's" and "don'ts" in your field?
Laura: Do strive for an active, healthy lifestyle.
Gina: Do call us if you have pain!
Anything else residents should know about your area of expertise?
Laura & Gina: Healing is available to everyone! There are so many people missing out on the joys of life because they’re hurting. They have tried everything and feel hopeless. And many times, pain in one area of your body is a manifestation of another issue going on.
