Trick or Teeth?
A Family Guide to Halloween Candy and Orthodontic Treatment

What candy can I eat with braces? We get this question all the time, especially this month! Treats are part of the fun of this holiday, but let’s help ensure this year’s Halloween candy leaves you or your child smiling rather than headed into your orthodontist’s office for a fix.
Halloween Candy To Eat With Braces
Chocolate: Chocolate melts completely and quickly and can be removed with good brushing! Hershey Kisses are great for braces wearers.
Peanut Butter Cups: So delicious and safe during orthodontic treatment, peanut butter cups are soft and dissolve easily too.
Apples: Fruit might not be a kid’s top pick for Halloween but apples can be dressed up! While we don’t advise biting into an apple with braces, apple slices can be dipped into melted chocolate.
Mint Patties: Tasty, refreshing and soft; another great choice for brace wearers!
Kit Kat Bars: Looking for a bit of crunch? – The delightful layers of soft chocolate and crisp wafer are a safe bet!
Halloween Candy to Avoid With Braces
Hard Candies: Hard candies dissolve slowly which exposes teeth to sugar for a longer period of time. The temptation to bite them is hard to overcome which can break braces and bend wires.
Chewing Gum: Gum is incredibly sticky, especially the bubble gum given out on Halloween. It can glue itself to braces and appliances and cause major issues.
Small Coated Candies: Small and hard candies like Skittles and Nerds get trapped under wires and can pop off a brace if bitten down on.
Taffy and Sticky Sweets: Definitely avoid hard caramels, Laffy Taffy and gummies. They stick to wires and braces and brushing them away is very difficult.
Sour Candies: Tasty yes, but sour candies are very acidic, which can wear down the enamel around braces and cause staining and cavities. Best to pass these on to someone else!
For families who have kiddos or are themselves in Invisalign, Invisalign is not a fixed appliance which is a benefit of this treatment option. As long as you remove your Invisalign while eating or drinking, nothing is off-limits. With that said, brushing your teeth before putting your Invisalign back on is important to keep your teeth clean and free of any sticky or sugary substances.
Helping you and those you care about smile bright and enjoy this holiday is important to every orthodontist! Should you or your child have any issues with your appliances please call your orthodontist’s office when they reopen so that your problem can be addressed. Our office, Sirius Orthodontics hopes you have a spook-tacular Halloween!
