Second Chance Thrift Store
Where animal lovers go to save!
Paumeria Chester, volunteer and Cassandra Lockwood, manager
Second Chance Thrift Store is a community-based fundraising retail store for ACTion Programs for Animals. The nonprofit needed a consistent source of funding and executive director Michel Munier wanted to start a thrift store.
This is where Cassandra Lockwood, Second Chance Thrift Store manager comes in. Cassandra was born in Grand Rapids, MI and moved to New Mexico in 1999 to study at NM State. She earned her undergraduate degree from Kendall College of Art And Design and her graduate degree in history from NMSU. Cassandra is from a big family and is the oldest of 5 kids. If she looks familiar, it could be because she worked in museums for 10 years and has been working in the nonprofit sector for the past 10 years.
Cassandra is the perfect person to head up this store. She is outstanding at helping customers find what they are looking for and at assessing an appropriate price for items. She’s been in the thrift store biz for more than a decade and been shopping at them for even longer. If the group receives a donation with high dollar value, Cassandra can spot it and make sure the nonprofit and the buyer get a good price. “Our customers are very generous,” Cassandra said. “If you aren’t a thrift-store shopper, you may not believe the donations we’ve received. From Rolex watches to designer clothing and accessories, we’ve seen it all.”
“Our customers are also very fashionable. They know what brands and styles they like and what looks good on them,” Cassandra added. And naturally, customers and donors are generous. “Donors are happy to give their items a new life and choose to donate to us because of the cause we support.”
“Do what you love,” Cassandra says. “If you can find a job that is fulfilling and makes you smile, take it!”

Action for Animals (APA)
Since May 2012, APA has rescued more than 5,800 animals. The majority of these have been dogs and cats/kittens pulled from our municipal shelter.
They can do this through the tireless volunteer work of rescue/foster coordinators, foster families, weekend adoptions, and on a very tight, shoestring budget.
