Where did you grow up? Tell us about your family.
I grew up in Mt. Pleasant and attended Porter-Gaud for 12 years. After college at Clemson University, I worked and lived in Germany and England for over five years. In 2008, I moved back to Charleston and began working at the family business, Southern Lumber & Millwork. I married my wife, Meredith (also a Charleston native), in 2005, and we have two wonderful children, Sydney (13) and Thaddeus (11). We also have a fun and energetic yellow lab, who always is up to no good.
Do you have a Fun Fact about your family?
My great great great Grandfather came over from Holland and became a harbor pilot in Charleston and lived on Stoll’s Alley. His son would also go on to be a harbor pilot as well, and he recorded the sighting of the Union ship, Star of the West, which is when the Civil War began.
Who started your business and where is it today?
It was my Grandfather, Herman Albrecht Jr, who started Southern Lumber & Millwork in 1941. After graduating from Murray Vocational School as a carpenter, he began making wood window sashes in his garage at his home on St. Margaret Street. As he noticed that there was a steady demand, he found space at a warehouse off East Bay Street and started the lumber company. In 1945, he realized that he needed more space and moved to 2031 King Street, where the company still operates today.
Over the years, Southern Lumber has expanded and changed product offerings to be able to best serve Charleston’s contractors and homeowners with our first-class service, and quality products. Today, Southern Lumber continues to invest in millwork innovations, including our third location, a door manufacturing shop. Our shop at our King Street location has the capability to create custom millwork pieces not limited to gates, brackets, windows, and stair railings. The millwork shop also runs approximately 6 million linear feet of our stock mouldings per year. Along with stock mouldings, we also have the technology to match and recreate any historical mouldings that may be found in the architectural designs around Charleston. With the technology to cut our own knives and run the material through the moulding machines here locally, we are able to save homeowners time and money.
Southern Lumber is also a fully stocked lumber yard with a wide variety of hardwoods, a window and door dealer, and also recently added a marine treated line to be able to serve the Lowcountry’s dock needs more easily.
What is unique about your business (what sets you apart from the rest)?
Southern Lumber believes in our core values; attention to detail, integrity and honesty, loyal and hardworking, family-oriented, and humility. With our core values, it is the mutually beneficial relationships among all of our builders, architects, homeowners, suppliers, and employees that truly separates us from the rest. Our people are our greatest asset. Currently in every department, we have employees with 20, 30, and even 40 years of experience. Generations of families have contributed to our success, and that sort of loyalty brings a lot of pride to Southern Lumber and its current employees. That amount of expertise is hard to match!
