That sunny disposition belongs to none other than Makayla Jazdzyk, whose contagious enthusiasm and knack for crafting the perfect cup have earned her the prestigious title of Biggby Coffee's 2024 Barista of the Year. Chosen out of nearly 5000 nominees across the nation, we are in the presence of a local celebrity right here in our little lakeshore community!

“People often wonder if I’ve been tapping into the coffee a little too much myself,” Mikayla jokes, “but honestly, I just love what I do!”

Makayla is as local as they come. “I grew up in Spring Lake and have lived here my whole life,” she shares. “I love the small-town vibe and getting to build meaningful relationships with the community.” That connection runs deep; Makayla has been a familiar face at the Spring Lake Biggby location since 2016, now going strong into her 10th year.

“I wouldn’t trade this job for the world,” she says with a smile.

Becoming Biggby’s Barista of the Year is no small feat. Makayla explained the rigorous selection process: nominations open in the spring, with customers submitting heartfelt testimonials on why their favorite barista deserves the crown.

“It’s more about quality than quantity,” Makayla explains. “Corporate really takes the time to read through each nomination to find someone who’s truly made an impact.”

And Makayla’s customers didn’t hold back. From her joyful attitude to her genuine connections, it’s clear she’s more than just a barista—she’s a community treasure!

When it comes to customer service, Makayla’s philosophy is simple: treat everyone like a potential new best friend.

“I love learning people’s names, hearing their stories, and connecting with them over delicious coffee,” she says. “Talking to different people is truly the highlight of my day.”

Makayla doesn’t just serve the community from behind the counter—she’s out in it, too. As General Manager, she organizes fun initiatives like “drink drops,” where she delivers free beverages to local businesses, adding a little extra cheer to their day.

She’s also passionate about supporting schools and events, whether it’s donating gift baskets for raffles or serving fresh drinks to attendees. “If there’s a way for Biggby to get involved, I’m all in!” she says.

For Makayla, the Barista of the Year award is a testament to the incredible support she’s received from her customers and the community she loves. “It’s such an honor to know so many people took the time to nominate me. It means the world!”
