Gina White, a devoted special education teacher and coach at Mill Creek High School, has spent the last decade enriching the lives of students with moderate intellectual disabilities (MoID). Her passion for teaching is evident in her classroom, where she works with students in grades 9-12, bringing subjects like science and math to life through engaging, hands-on activities.
Educational Background
Gina's journey in education began at Augusta State University, where she earned her teaching degree. Over the past ten years, she has honed her skills and expertise, gaining experience in various types of classrooms, from general education to self-contained special education. Her dedication to her students and her craft is unwavering.
What She Loves Most About Teaching
For Gina, the most rewarding aspect of teaching is her students. "Though I am supposed to be the one teaching them, they teach me way more," she says. Her students' authenticity, joy in the little things, and unconditional love inspire her daily. This reciprocal relationship is the heart of Gina's teaching philosophy.
Mentorship and Community
Gina acknowledges the countless mentors who have supported her throughout her career. Among them, Joanna Cavender and Emily Jones stand out. Their passion for their jobs and their students is contagious, and they continuously offer guidance and innovative ideas. Gina, Joanna, and Emily are known as a formidable trio at Mill Creek, working together to create a stellar self-contained department.
Advice for Aspiring Educators
To those considering a career in teaching, Gina offers enthusiastic encouragement: "Do it!" While teaching may not be the most lucrative profession, it offers invaluable rewards such as summers off, supportive colleagues who become like family, and the profound connections formed with students. "The relationships you build with your students will be the greatest thing they take away from your classroom," Gina emphasizes.
Career Path and Achievements
Gina's career has been marked by versatility and growth. She has taught every level of self-contained special education at Mill Creek, including severe and profound intellectual disabilities, Autism levels 1 and 2, and adapted physical education for Gwinnett County. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Gina serves as a head coach for the MCHS Lacrosse and Flag Football program as well as a county mentor, contributing to the school's athletic programs and supporting fellow educators.
Family and Personal Life
Gina's family life is as vibrant and dynamic as her professional one. Her husband, Nathan, also teaches at Mill Creek, specializing in physics and oceanography, and serves as the head wrestling coach. Together, they have three boys: Brady (7), Beau (4), and Brooks (18 months). The Whites are an active sports family, with both parents coaching and their children participating in various sports.
Pets and Passions
The White family includes a beloved black lab/Great Dane mix named Champ. When they're not on the field or in the classroom, they love spending time at the beach. Gina's favorite vacation destination is the beach, and they look forward to their second beach trip of the summer before the new school year begins.
Gina White's dedication to her students, her school, and her family makes her an exemplary educator and role model. Her journey over the past decade is a testament to the impact that passionate and committed teachers can have on their students and communities.
