Exploring Italy with Three Generations: A Journey of Discovery & Awe
Florence, Ponte Vecchio bridge
Traveling is more than just a pastime; it’s a way to experience the world in all its beauty and complexity. This past summer, we embarked on an unforgettable 8-day adventure across Italy, as three generations —me, Sherryl Major, and my daughter and granddaughter, Lauren and Celia Pawelko. Together, we traversed through the ancient streets of Rome, the artistic heart of Florence, the culinary haven of Modena, the romantic waterways of Venice, and the breathtaking landscapes of the Lake Como region. We concluded our journey in the vibrant city of Milan.
Our Journey Begins
Our journey started with a flight to Rome, where we spent our days exploring the city via golf cart—an ideal way to navigate the bustling streets and historical sites. The convenience of zipping through Rome’s iconic landmarks set the tone for our adventure. From there, we took a train to Florence, soaking in the rich history and culture that the birthplace of the Renaissance offers.
In Modena, we indulged in the city’s famous cuisine before heading to Venice, where we traded our car for water taxis and gondolas, allowing us to explore the city’s intricate canals and hidden gems. The magic of Venice, with its winding waterways and historic architecture, was like stepping into another world.
A Highlight: The Lake Como Region
As much as we loved every part of Italy, the Lake Como region stole our hearts. Nestled between the Swiss and Italian Alps, this area offered some of the most stunning landscapes I’ve ever seen. We have friends at a local winery, Aziende Agricola Sorasso in Domaso, where we enjoyed an unforgettable five-course meal paired with exquisite wines. The views from the winery, perched high on a mountain, were nothing short of spectacular—truly a feast for the senses.
Culinary Delights
One of the joys of traveling in Italy is the food, and our trip was no exception. The lasagna we encountered throughout the country was like a culinary dream—light, creamy, and utterly unforgettable. However, the meal that stands out the most was at the Aziende Agricola Sorasso winery. The combination of fresh, local ingredients, expertly prepared dishes, and world-class wines made it a meal to remember.
A Birthday to Remember: The Taylor Swift Connection
This incredible journey was centered around a very special occasion—my granddaughter Celia’s birthday. As part of her celebration, we surprised her with tickets to Taylor Swift’s ERAS Tour in Europe. The tickets were surprisingly affordable compared to U.S. prices, and the savings allowed us to extend our stay in Italy. Watching Celia’s excitement as she experienced her first major concert in such an extraordinary setting was a highlight of the trip. It was the perfect blend of music, travel, and family, making her birthday an event none of us will ever forget.
Travel Tips for Future Adventurers
If I could offer advice to future travelers, it would be to stay a little longer if you can, and consider visiting during the spring or fall to avoid the peak tourist season. Our journey through Italy was enriched by the flexibility of being off-season travelers, which allowed us to explore with fewer crowds and more freedom.
In addition, renting a car in Lake Como is a must if you want to explore the charming small villages that dot the coastline. Hotel location is crucial, especially in cities like Rome and Venice, where being centrally located can make all the difference in your experience.
A Journey of a Lifetime
Throughout my career in the travel industry, I’ve had the privilege of promoting study abroad and traveling extensively with my children. However, nothing compares to the experience of traveling with three generations. Seeing Italy through my granddaughter’s eyes, watching her discover a new world, was a moment I’ll cherish forever. It’s not just about the places you visit, but the memories you create with the ones you love.
Italy is a country that never ceases to amaze, with every corner offering a new adventure, a new story. From the vibrant streets of Rome to the serene beauty of Lake Como, our journey was a testament to the joy of exploration, the richness of history, and the power of family. As the saying goes, “Travel... the only thing you can buy that makes you rich.” This trip enriched our lives in ways we’ll treasure for years to come.
