Meet Amy & Bill Hillis
Amy and Bill Hillis, the proud owners of Social Pet Hotel & Daycare, are passionate about providing top-tier care for dogs in the Charlotte area. Their journey, both personal and professional, is a testament to their dedication, resilience and love for animals.
Bill grew up in Lawrenceburg, TN, a small town near the Alabama border, while Amy was born and raised in Sandusky, OH. Their story began in 2005 when they met in Charleston, SC. Amy was spending the summer at Folly Beach while Bill attended summer school at The Citadel. Even when distance separated them – while Bill trained with the SC Army National Guard and later deployed to Afghanistan – their commitment to each other never wavered. After returning from his deployment, Bill settled in Charlotte, where Amy had already begun her career in education. They married, built their family and embarked on an entrepreneurial journey together.
How Social Pet Hotel & Daycare Was Born
While pursuing his Executive MBA at Queens University of Charlotte, Bill developed an idea for a pet daycare business. Initially conceptualized as a dog daycare in a high-rise apartment building, zoning restrictions forced a pivot. However, the experience highlighted an overwhelming demand for high-quality pet care in Charlotte.
Determined to meet that need, Bill spent two years refining the business plan before launching Social Pet Hotel & Daycare in Pineville in June 2014. Since then, the business has expanded to three locations in the Charlotte region, offering a range of services, including daycare, lodging, grooming and training.
What Sets Social Pet Apart?
Social Pet is more than just a dog daycare – it’s a personalized pet care experience. Bill and Amy believe that every dog is unique, so their services are tailored to each pet’s individual personality, behavior and needs. Unlike many facilities, Social Pet has no breed or temperament restrictions, welcoming all dogs into their care.
“We exist to enrich the lives of dogs and the relationships they share with those who love them,” says Bill. “Whether it’s a shy pup who needs a gentle introduction to socialization or a high-energy dog who thrives on structured play, we create an experience that is enriching and fulfilling for every dog.”
Advice for Pet Owners
Bill and Amy emphasize the importance of research when choosing pet care. “Think of pet daycare like selecting a pre-k or private school for your child,” they suggest. “Visit different facilities, talk to other pet parents and observe the environment. Your pet deserves the best care possible.”
They also highlight the value of professional credentials. Social Pet is recognized internationally by IBPSA (International Boarding and Pet Services Association) and PACCC (Professional Animal Care Certification Council). Amy even chaired PACCC, advocating for higher standards in the pet care industry.
A Business Built on Passion
Now over a decade in business, the Hillis family remains deeply committed to serving the local community. They live nearby in Fort Mill with their two beloved dogs and their 9-year-old son, Cooper.
Despite multiple offers to sell the business, Social Pet remains family-owned and dedicated to continuous improvement. “We’re not done,” Bill says. “We’re still working every day to make the experience the best it can be for our canine and human clients.”
