Never Slow Down, Never Grow Old

If you’ve ever spotted two enthusiastic runners in matching shirts trotting through Sugar Mill Pond, chances are you’ve met Paul and Misty Walters. These two have been a part of the neighborhood’s running scene for the past ten years, leading the charge with Team RWB Eagles on Thursdays and the Cajun Road Runners-Smoothie King Run on Mondays. If you're looking for a fun way to stay active, consider joining them for a 2 or 3-mile route through the neighborhood—plus, you’ll get some cool perks like discounts on smoothies and a free beer at Corner Bar!

A Love Born from a Shared Passion
Paul and Misty’s love story started just the way you’d expect from two running enthusiasts—on a running date at Girard Park. Introduced by a mutual friend who knew they both had a love for pounding the pavement, their connection grew with every step, leading them to celebrate 23 years of marriage this past March. Now, their shared passion for running is more than just a hobby—it’s a way of life.

From Big Moves to Downsizing
Originally from Richwood, WV (Paul) and Robbinsdale, MN (Misty), both found their way to Broussard at different times—Paul’s family moved for his father’s work with railroad tank cars, while Misty’s family settled after years in the carnival business (which they still operate today!). Deciding it was time to downsize, Paul and Misty made their way to Sugar Mill Pond, where they now reside with their beloved 15 ½-year-old golden doodle, Chloe.

A Life of Running, Golf, and Community
Paul, retired from the oil field 12 years ago, now spends his time enjoying golf at Eagle Ridge Golf Club, where he’s been a member for over a decade. He also competes in monthly Pro/Am golf tournaments. Misty, on the other hand, is still working at Cohen, Schwarz, & Co. in Lafayette, balancing her career with an impressive 7 ½-year running streak—that’s 2,766 consecutive days of running and counting! Whether it's rain, shine, or even pre-dawn before an early flight, Misty has kept up her routine, running straight through the covid pandemic and planning to do the same through menopause!

Matching Shirts, Big Adventures
One of the quirks that make Paul and Misty stand out—besides their commitment to fitness—is their matching attire. They run the same races, volunteer together, and donate platelets each time receiving matching shirts. They have plenty of the same shirts and choose to wear them on the same days, making it nearly impossible to miss them when they’re out and about. When they’re not running, they enjoy the convenience of walking everywhere in Sugar Mill Pond, whether it’s to the gym, coffee shop, restaurants, or even Paul’s sister’s house.

Senior Olympics, Global Running, and Marathons
Paul and Misty aren’t just neighborhood runners—they take their passion worldwide. They’ve run races in Germany, the Netherlands, and the Caribbean, completed marathons across the U.S., and even participated in the Senior Olympic Games, competing in track, mini golf, and pickleball.

Living by Their Mottos
Paul lives by the saying, “Never slow down, never grow old.” Misty’s motto: “Life is short—buy the house, run the marathon, take the trip, spend quality time with your loved ones.” And they certainly practice what they preach, having traveled to incredible destinations like Italy, Germany, Belgium, Octoberfest in Germany, a land and sea cruise in Alaska, the Bahamas, and more, always combining their love for adventure with their love for fitness.

So, if you see Paul and Misty running through the neighborhood, give them a wave—or better yet, join them on a run! Their energy is contagious, their passion for the community is inspiring, and they’d love to welcome you to their ever-growing running family.

Welcome to Sugar Mill Pond, Paul and Misty!
