From Beach Stray to Beloved
Jobos shares how a beach in Puerto Rico led him to a life of love and adventure.
Name: Jobos (the J is pronounced like an H)
Gender: Female
Breed: Orange Tabby Cat
Age: approximately 14 years old
Humans: Orlando Perez III and Monique Domingo
How We Met: From Beach Stray to Beloved Family Member
It was a beautiful day in January in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, and I was doing my usual rounds around the beach villas. Now, let me tell you, hunting for food isn’t easy—it takes serious cat skills and a whole lot of strategy. I quickly figured out that hanging around the beach villas was way more pleasant (and way smarter) than battling other cats for scraps on the streets. Plus, my human friends there always shared yummy treats with me. But this day? Oh, it was extra special. I found this gorgeous beachfront porch, and guess what? There was a funny and sweet human hanging out there—just visiting for the holidays. I instantly loved him! He had the coziest couch and made me feel all warm and safe, so I made a big decision: I wasn’t leaving, whether he liked it or not! We had so much fun together, and everything was awesome until… I saw him packing to leave for the mainland! My heart broke into a million tiny pieces. So, I did what any smart cat would do—I insisted he take me with him. Next thing I knew, we were at the vet getting ready for my very first (and life-changing) plane ride!
The Story Behind My Name
My Dad, Orlando, found me on a beach called Playa Jobos (the J sounds like an H!) on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. It was such a special moment that he decided to name me Jobos, so we’d always remember where we first met. Isn’t that sweet? But here’s the thing—sometimes Mom (Monique) and Dad give me all sorts of other cute nicknames, like Pumpkin, Honey Baby, and Mamas (that’s super common for baby girls in Latin cultures). I guess it’s just because I’m so lovable!
My Talents and Quirks
I love the great outdoors! You might’ve seen me on a morning stroll around the pond with my Mom or Dad. Mom usually pops me into my super comfy, breathable backpack so I can watch all the pretty trees and birds without, you know, getting lost (that would be scary). It’s so much fun… but only when it’s not blazing hot! My absolute favorite place? Sunbathing on the balcony at home. That’s where I spend most of my time living my best life. Oh, and did I mention we’re a martial arts family? Sometimes I train with Mom and Dad in our garage gym. My favorite cardio? Chasing those sneaky lizards who try to come inside. They’re fast, but I always show them who’s boss! And when we’re not outside or training, I help Mom and Dad with their work in the office. I love attending all of their work meetings—it’s important to make sure everything’s running smoothly with a little purr-sonal supervision!
What My Parents Love Most About Me
My parents always say the best thing about me is how loving and caring I am. Whenever Mom or Dad has a stressful day, I always make sure to remind them that I’m here to give cuddles and support. After all, that’s what best fur-friends are for! Oh, and I don’t stop there—I even keep watch for intruders all night long so they can sleep safe and sound. I’m basically their tiny, fluffy bodyguard and best friend!
Funny Moments and Zoomies
One time, when Mom was working at night, I got a serious case of the zoomies! I zoomed all over the second floor, up and down the stairs, and then I ran so fast from the stairs to the dining table across from Mom’s desk that I slid all the way to the opposite end! I could tell Mom got really nervous that I almost flew off but, of course, I caught myself just in time. I immediately looked at Mom like, 'Did you see that?! What a thrill!' Mom nervously laughed and was just happy I didn’t wipe out.
Am I Spoiled? Absolutely!
I wouldn’t say I’m spoiled—I’d say I’m influential! A leader, if you will, and a very effective one at that. If I want to go outside, get a treat, play games, or enjoy endless cuddle time, I know exactly which leadership strategy works best on Mom and Dad. A little charm, a little purring… and voilà, mission accomplished! I mean, I even convinced Dad to fly me all the way from Puerto Rico to Connecticut, and then from Connecticut to Louisiana. Okay, okay… maybe I am spoiled, but let’s keep that between us!
How I’ve Enriched My Family’s Life
I’ve taught my parents so much about unconditional love! Can you believe that Mom didn’t even like cats before I came along? Now she’s completely obsessed! Silly Mom, she thought cats were all aloof and unaffectionate. But with my irresistible purrs and cuddles, I showed her and Dad just how amazing unconditional love can be. Now our home is overflowing with empathy, support, and joy—thanks to yours truly!
Purrs and whisker kisses,
Jobos
