JMYAC: A Legacy of Music and Inspiration

Nurturing Young Talent and Inspiring Future Musicians

The Jackie McGehee Young Artists Competition (JMYAC) has been a cornerstone of the New Mexico music community for three decades. Jackie McGehee and her husband, Everett, held the first competition in 1994, after being inspired by McGehee's experience as a judge for the National Guild of Pianists. Witnessing the exceptional talent of young pianists across the state, Jackie recognized the need for a statewide competition to showcase their abilities and provide a meaningful goal for their musical journey.

With the support of the Symphony Guild and Exxon, JMYAC was established and quickly gained momentum. The New Mexico Symphony Orchestra offered the competition winner the unique opportunity to perform with the orchestra, providing invaluable exposure and experience. Over the years, the competition has continued to thrive thanks to the generosity of private donors, who contribute amounts ranging from $50 to $25,000 enabling them to continue providing this valuable opportunity for young musicians. Along with the unwavering support of the guild and the symphony (now known as the New Mexico Philharmonic), as well as the dedication of countless outstanding volunteers. One of McGehee's most rewarding experiences as founder has been hearing from former contestants who describe their performance with the orchestra as their greatest joy and most memorable moment of their musical careers. This feedback serves as a testament to the impact JMYAC has had on the lives of young musicians.

Despite facing challenges, such as the symphony's past bankruptcy and reorganization, JMYAC has persevered. The competition's ability to adapt and evolve has been essential to its long-term success. In recent years, JMYAC has embraced technology by funding the streaming and distribution of the competition through YouTube. Additionally, the competition has expanded to include string competitions, and plans to introduce solo performances and concertoi for piano entrants in 2025.

The JMYAC is a platform for showcasing extraordinary young musical talent. Contestants, ranging from 10 to 21 years old, demonstrate exceptional dedication, focus, and passion for their craft. The advanced requirements of the competition demand rigorous practice and commitment, resulting in performances that captivate audiences. Judges, who come from across the United States, consistently praise the exceptional caliber of JMYAC contestants.

While reflecting on the past 30 years, McGehee shared, “over the past 30 years many former contestants of JMYAC share their lives with us. Some are in the medical profession and still enjoy music, either performing or supporting young musicians. Many of them are still performing and teaching. Several of them are scientists and mathematicians. I am so pleased and proud of these former contestants.” McGehee’s advice to young musicians is simple yet profound: "Follow your dreams, practice, and learn from each challenge." This timeless wisdom resonates with aspiring musicians of all ages and serves as a guiding principle for JMYAC. As the competition continues to grow and evolve, it remains committed to providing a platform for young musicians to showcase their talent, inspire others, and pursue their musical dreams. Applications are now being accepted for this prestigious event, with the next competition scheduled to be held in 2025 on February 13th, 14th, and 15th.
