Heart of the Community
Patti Jo Bach’s Inspired by Hurricane Helene Response

When Patti Jo Bach talks about her neighbors and community, her admiration shines through. Known for her warmth and selflessness, Patti Jo embodies the spirit of neighborly kindness, and her actions in response to Hurricane Helene reflect her unwavering commitment to those in need. She also recognizes that she is but one of many Cliffs residents who have done the same.
In the days following the hurricane, Patti Jo and her husband, John, opened their home to a young, newlywed couple from their church who faced a dire situation: after building a tiny home in Hendersonville, they found themselves stranded by a 50-foot sinkhole and a washed out bridge that took away access to their home. With a true heart of service, they welcomed them into their home, thus offering not just shelter but a sense of stability amid uncertainty.
Beyond her home, Patti Jo rallied the Valley community for those affected. When she posted about collecting warm clothing, coats, hats, gloves, blankets, and sleeping bags, she was overwhelmed by the response. Within just a week, over 40 bags of donations appeared on her doorstep, each one a testament to the Cliffs community’s generous spirit. She’s been delivering these items to the Hendersonville Rescue Mission, ensuring that everyone facing the cold season has some comfort and warmth. Others in Valley have also collected and delivered clothing and toys.
Working tirelessly with Biltmore Church’s 828Strong.com initiative and Hendersonville Rescue Mission Patti Jo and John, alongside Cliffs neighbors Denise Holmberg and Annette Davidson, helped serve hot meals, diapers, hygiene products, water, nonperishable food, cleaning supplies, and other essentials to those in need. Together with the Biltmore Church volunteers, they distributed 1,800 hot meals in a single day and made direct deliveries to families lacking transportation. Other members of her community and church joined in, going out with chainsaws to clear blocked roads and help those unable to leave their homes, embodying the resilience and strength of the Cliffs Valley and Western North Carolina spirit.
When asked what inspires her most, Patti Jo’s answer is simple yet powerful: “Sooooo many people with huge heartfelt concern who are glad to do whatever will help!” In a time marked by uncertainty and loss, Patti Jo’s unwavering dedication has not only strengthened her community but has also brought out the best in her neighbors, each of them stepping up to offer support, connection, and hope. There were many other Valley folks who also collected, organized and served in various efforts.
As Patti Jo prays for those whose lives have been irrevocably changed by Helene, she reflects on the road ahead for many: “The long battle with the aftermath of trauma, fear, despair, loss and decisions regarding what, where, and how to move on.” Her journey and those she’s inspired around her serve as a reminder of the profound impact that one person’s kindness can have, sparking hope and healing in even the most challenging times.
