Sharon Brewer and Jojo
In the heart of our cherished neighborhood lives Sharon Brewer, an inspiring woman whose story is as rich and vibrant as the community she adores. Sharon, a dedicated registered nurse and assistant professor, has been a proud Colonies resident for five years. She shares her home with Jojo, a Tibetan Spaniel mix whom she lovingly rescued.
Sharon's professional journey began in 1981 when she graduated as a Registered Nurse from Northwest Texas Hospital School of Nursing. Over the years, her commitment to healthcare led her to further her education. In 1986, she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from West Texas State University, and she achieved her Master's degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner from West Texas A&M University in 1997. Today, she imparts her extensive knowledge to aspiring nurses as a faculty member at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing, shaping the future of healthcare with unparalleled passion.
Sharon's deep-rooted connection to Amarillo ignites her love for our community. Moving from a small town in the Texas Panhandle to Amarillo in 1980, she has since become an integral part of our neighborhood tapestry. "What I love most about living in The Colonies is the feeling of community," Sharon shares. "Everyone waves at neighbors out walking or stops to chat at the mailbox. I also love walking through the neighborhood and enjoying the parks and the beautiful yards of my neighbors." This sense of togetherness resonates with Sharon, reminding her that she’s truly found her home here.
Family is at Sharon's core. Her two daughters, Gay and Jennifer, have both embarked on successful paths of their own. Gay resides in College Station with her husband and son, Devon, who is currently a student at Texas A&M University. Jennifer, close by in Amarillo, is the music director for the Amarillo Little Theater. Jennifer's daughter Kate, who is married with a three-year-old daughter named Emma, fills Sharon's days with laughter and joy. "I am lucky to pick Emma up from preschool most days and bring her home to play for a few hours," Sharon beams. "She loves to read books, put puzzles together, and help me cook."
Sharon's greatest joys also include her hobbies - gardening, reading, and sewing. "I made all of my family's clothing when they were younger, and now I make quilts," she explains. Her dedication to her craft is evident in the prom and wedding dresses she meticulously created for her daughters, adding a unique and sentimental touch to their special days. More recently, Sharon has made quilts for every member of her family, encapsulating her love in each stitch.
In a household rich with traditions, Thanksgiving is a cherished time for Sharon and her family. They gather together, cooking dinner and sharing stories about her father, especially his famous cornbread dressing. Christmas brings another beloved tradition—making Christmas Enchiladas, a festive and delicious celebration.
Sharon's warmth and enthusiasm extend to her favorites in life: she savors Mexican food, adores Five Guys Burgers and Shakes, and enjoys the tranquil beauty of Taos, NM in the summer. Her spirit cheers for the Cowboys, and her taste in entertainment spans from classic TV shows like "Monk" and "Northern Exposure" to comedic gems like "Schitt's Creek." And when it comes to music, the nostalgic notes of Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock N Roll" hold a special place in her heart.
Though Sharon often thinks about retirement, she admits, "I just can't bring myself to do it yet. I think I love being a nurse too much to give it up." Her unwavering dedication to nursing and her community illustrates a life of service, love, and joy.
Sharon Brewer, with her unwavering passion for nursing and her heart rooted deeply in our community, continues to be a beacon of warmth and inspiration in the Colonies. Whether she's teaching future nurses, crafting quilts imbued with love, or simply savoring the camaraderie of our neighborhood, Sharon embodies the spirit of connection and dedication that makes our community so special. She, alongside Jojo, is not just a resident but a cherished neighbor, always ready with a smile and a story to share.
