Celebrating Women’s History Month

It is eye-opening to realize Women’s History Month has only been celebrated in the United States since 1987, when women have been contributing to society since the beginning of time. Women’s History Month is a dedicated month to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women to U.S. history, but I think it’s also important to reflect the contributions of women to our local community, as well. Below, I share some of my favorite tidbits from a few local, women-owned businesses.
- Did you know that the mother and grandmother of Barrel and Vine co-owner Dorothy come in every day and make their delicious pierogis from scratch from a family recipe? Talk about dedication!
- Did you know Angel Bhatti, owner of A Beauty Laser and Skin in Downtown Plainfield opened her beautiful med spa right before the pandemic and was able to keep it open on her own? What an amazing feat.
- Did you know local Real Estate Brokers Kathy Dames and Shannon Dames Simotes revived the historic Cape Code home in downtown Plainfield that is now currently their Plainfield office? It is now recognized in the Downtown Historic District and National Register District registries.
Additionally, Plainfield should be honored to recognize the work of their own who have gone into the world and inspired millions of people. Women like actress and comedian Melissa McCarthy, who is a two-time Emmy winner and two-time Academy Award nominee. Melissa was raised on a farm in Plainfield and has taken the entertainment world by storm. What about New York Times best-selling author Mary Kubica, another Plainfield local. Mary’s books have been translated into over thirty languages and have sold over two million copies worldwide. These women, along with all the other strong and determined women in our community, make Plainfield proud.
This month, please take a minute to support your favorite local woman-owned business. In a time where diversity is being overlooked, it’s imperative we remember women and everything they do to keep our homes, our jobs, and our communities running. Thank you, women. It could not be done without you. We salute you!
