A Community Comes Together: The Tribute Rallies for a Veteran in Need

Last year, Keith Vesper posted on The Tribute Facebook page about Tommy Neal, a 91-year-old disabled veteran in dire need of help. The Colony Police had reached out to the community, and the response was overwhelming. Residents came together, exceeding all expectations with their generosity and support.

While Keith was out of town, I stepped in to assist with food dropoffs and monetary donations from the kindhearted residents. The outpouring of help and ideas was incredible, and it quickly became clear that Tommy needed more than just a few days of food. My husband and I, along with Officer Henderson, visited Tommy to better understand his situation.

When we arrived, we found a man who was frail but kind, living in challenging conditions. His home was in disrepair, with no working refrigerator for his diabetic medications or food, bare cupboards, a flooded toilet, and a leaky roof. The temperature inside was a stifling 98°, as his electricity had been cut off due to unpaid bills.

Keith Vesper spearheaded an effort that transformed Tommy’s life. The Tribute residents united together in support: Lou and Francine DiBella of LDJ Roofing installed gutters for free, and Allen Lupton with Lucky Landscaping cleaned up his yard. The Vesper family continues to ensure Tommy’s yard is maintained. Nick Royer of New View Roofing repaired the roof leaks, and numerous residents donated food and supplies.

Stacey Leslie and The Agency eXp Realty Group provided Tommy with a new refrigerator, toilet, flood repairs, a TV, and more. Neighborhood handyman Jeff Perry donated his time to fix ceiling leaks, broken lights, and drywall mold. Meals on Wheels now delivers regular meals, and Keith started a GoFundMe that raised over $5,000, covering Tommy’s utility bills, compression socks, and other necessities.

Tommy’s story captivated all who met him. A former Warner Brothers employee, he has over 3,000 records and stories of meeting legends like Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, and Jesse Owens, his best friend and the godfather to his late daughter who died of cancer.

On September 22, 2024, Tommy turned 91. To celebrate, The Agency eXp Realty Group hosted a surprise party at The Colony Senior Center, complete with burgers flipped by The Hamburger Man, music from his records, and a gathering of first responders and volunteers who have helped him. Veterans from The Colony were invited to honor Tommy’s service in the Korean War.

Tommy’s journey is a testament to the power of community and compassion. The Tribute neighbors came together to make a difference, and in doing so, they gained a friend and an inspiring story they’ll always remember. .
