Celebrating Lasya - Thornwood’s Award-Winning Dance School
Since 2017, Lakshmy Balachandran has been a vibrant part of the Thornwood community. Moving here the day before her oldest son's first birthday, Lakshmy and her family were instantly charmed by the peaceful ambiance, friendly neighbors, and excellent amenities, particularly the conveniently located elementary school.
Lakshmy's passion for classical dance began at the tender age of six. Her early exposure to live performances and cultural events sparked a lifelong dedication to Bharatanatyam, a South Indian classical dance form. Her journey is a testament to her belief that art is ever-evolving, and she continues to learn and grow, currently enrolled in a three-year diploma program at a renowned University in India.
Lakshmy practices Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam, two distinct South Indian dance styles. Bharatanatyam is known for its precise, angular movements and symmetrical postures, while Mohiniyattam emphasizes grace and fluidity. Through these forms, Lakshmy conveys powerful narratives from mythology and folklore, often highlighting themes of good triumphing over evil.
One of her most memorable achievements is choreographing a dance for her students at Lasya Dance School. Despite only being a year old, Lasya Dance School made a significant mark by securing third prize at the American Natya Idol Festival in St. Louis. Competing against talented groups nationwide, Lakshmy's team, comprising young dancers aged 8 to 11, showcased exceptional grace and coordination, reflecting the dedication and hard work put in by both students and their supportive parents, many of whom are Thornwood residents.
Balancing her roles as a Lead Engineer, mother of two, and dance instructor, Lakshmy credits her success to the unwavering support of her spouse and community. Her dedication to fostering a love for dance in her students is evident in her engaging and interactive teaching methods, tailored to ignite interest and passion in young dancers.
Lakshmy also actively participates in intercultural events and festivals, promoting cultural exchange and enriching Thornwood's local arts scene. Through her performances and teaching, she aims to spread joy, positivity, and a deeper appreciation for the arts.
