Celebrating Katie Hauser

A Thornwood Champion

Katie Hauser and Shona Fowler

Katie Hauser, an 11-year-old fifth-grader, has called Thornwood home for ten years. What she loves most about our neighborhood is the incredible people who make it special. Katie shines brightly in D303 Special Olympics Bowling and Track. Her passion for bowling is matched only by her excitement for the spring games every April, where she proudly represents D303 Special Olympics in the 20 Meter Walk. Using her gait trainer, Katie independently walks the distance—a monumental achievement made possible by year-round practice with her mom, Erica Hauser, and her dedicated physical therapists.

Katie's journey with Special Olympics began in second grade, thanks to D303 Physical Therapist Shona Fowler, who introduced her to the program and has been her steadfast supporter ever since. Diagnosed with infantile spasms epilepsy at just four months old, Katie’s condition evolved into Focal Cortical Dysplasia. At age four, she underwent a hemispherectomy, a life-altering brain surgery that greatly reduced her seizures but resulted in left-side paralysis.

Katie's story is one of resilience, determination, and unwavering support from her family and therapists. Over the years, she has earned gold and bronze medals, each a testament to her hard work and indomitable spirit. Watching Katie compete and see her joy is nothing short of inspiring. She embodies the belief that with dedication and effort, extraordinary achievements are within reach.

Katie's spirit has never wavered. She has been involved in physical therapy for most of her life, practicing walking for hours and hours. Her participation in Special Olympics is a testament to her perseverance. Each year, Katie looks forward to pushing herself further and having the time of her life with her fellow athletes. Her joy during the events is contagious, bringing smiles to everyone who watches.

Katie is living proof that with determination, practice, and support, one can achieve incredible things. Her story is a powerful reminder that no obstacle is too great to overcome with dedication and effort. Thornwood is proud to have Katie as part of our community, and we look forward to cheering her on in all her future endeavors.

We congratulate Katie Hauser, Shona Fowler, and the Hauser family for being Stroll Thornwood’s Athlete of the Month. Well done, Katie! We are all cheering for you.
