Young Artist in Thornwood: Elia Sterusky

Discovering Creativity and Inspiration Through Art

Elia Sterusky has called Thornwood home for three years, enjoying her time with friends at the park, pool, and school. Her love for school, especially writing, is evident as she recalls a project about her favorite animal, the tiger. When she’s not focused on her studies, Elia spends time playing outside on her backyard playset with friends and her older brother.

Elia’s artistic journey began in first grade art class when she drew a picture filled with swirls. Her teacher, Mrs. Hubbs, praised her work, encouraging her to continue creating. This encouragement led to a detailed room drawing in second grade, complete with a couch, chandelier, and various intricate elements. Elia’s classmates were impressed, and Mrs. Hubbs proudly showcased her artwork.

Her creative process involves starting with pencil sketches, outlining in black Sharpie, and adding colors with markers or colored pencils. Though she occasionally uses paint, Elia prefers drawing flowers and princesses. This summer, she attended Art Camp, where she created a unique seahorse without any stencils, showcasing her pattern-making skills. A recent princess drawing, which initially seemed challenging, turned out beautifully, much to her satisfaction.
Elia draws inspiration from Mrs. Hubbs, who creates intriguing drawings and mixes colors in unique ways. This has sparked Elia’s aspiration to become an art teacher one day. Despite occasional frustrations when things don’t go as planned, Elia appreciates the flexibility of starting with pencil, allowing her to erase and retry until she’s satisfied.

Ultimately, Elia hopes her art brings happiness to others, leaving them thinking, “Wow! That’s really good.” Her dedication and enthusiasm for art continue to grow, promising a bright future for this young Thornwood artist.
