Spreading Kindness in Memory of Kendall
How Kendall’s Kindness Inspires a Community
Kendall’s Kindness is a non-profit organization founded by Kim and Jim Maffia, longtime Thornwood residents, to honor the memory of their daughter, Kendall Maffia. Kendall, who tragically lost her battle with mental health challenges in 2021, was known for her gentle spirit, creativity, and acts of kindness. The Maffia family, deeply impacted by their loss, have created this initiative to spread the kindness Kendall embodied throughout her life.
On Wednesday, October 9, Thornwood neighbors, friends, family, local government officials, and community and business leaders gathered outside Smitty’s in St. Charles for a special ribbon-cutting ceremony to honor Kendall and the positive impact of Kendall’s Kindness.
Geneva-based artist, Catherine Tilly, was commissioned by the Maffia Family (with the help of the St. Charles Art Council) to create a piece that would inspire kindness and connection within the community. Selected for her unique style and heartfelt approach, Catherine expressed how rewarding it was to share her artwork and positive message with local residents. She shared that one of the best parts of the experience was meeting so many wonderful people who celebrated her work and encouraged her throughout the project. Their support added a special warmth to the project, highlighting the way art and kindness can unite and uplift.
Kendall’s Kindness encourages individuals to engage in random acts of kindness on the 12th of every month, in honor of Kendall’s birthday, June 12th. These gestures can be as simple as offering a smile, sharing baked goods (one of Kendall's favorite activities), or buying someone a cup of coffee. The goal is to inspire a ripple of kindness, reminding others to be present, take a break from social media, and connect with those around them.
Beyond promoting kindness, Kendall’s Kindness also addresses mental health awareness, a topic close to the Maffia family. The organization aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and depression, while raising funds for local mental health support groups and suicide prevention initiatives. Additionally, Kendall’s Kindness offers scholarships to graduating seniors from St. Charles North and East High Schools who plan to pursue art degrees, reflecting Kendall's passion for the arts.
Kim and Jim Maffia continue to foster community connections through events like the Kendall’s Kindness 5K Memorial Birthday Walk and partnerships with local organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs and Random Acts Matter. Their dedication ensures that Kendall’s legacy lives on, spreading compassion and kindness throughout the Fox River Valley and beyond.
