Bear the Surprise Pup: A Family's Tale of Love and Laughter
From high-kill shelter to cherished family member, Bear's playful antics and loving nature have captured hearts.
Meet Bear, the lovable three-year-old mixed breed who has stolen the hearts of Shanee Cox and her family in Thornwood. Bear’s journey began at a high-kill shelter in Tennessee, where he and his sister were rescued and fostered by a wonderful family. When the Cox family adopted Bear as a puppy, they were told he was a Newfoundland and Lab mix. Curious about his true heritage, they conducted a DNA test and discovered he’s a unique blend of Golden Retriever, Rottweiler, Chow, Boxer, and American Staffordshire Terrier.
Bear got his name because, as a puppy, he looked just like a bear cub. Mischievous yet sensitive, Bear loves to play “Jack in the Box,” hiding and then popping up to surprise passersby with his bark. Despite his playful antics, he’s incredibly affectionate, always eager to greet visitors, show his belly for rubs, and enjoy a pup cup from Starbucks.
Bear was a special gift to Shanee after the passing of her beloved 16-year-old dog. She recalls the heartwarming moment when Bear’s little face peeked out of a huge box, instantly bringing joy and love back into her life. Today, you can often find Bear hanging out at Ruffners, enjoying adventures filled with treats and new friends, embodying the spirit of community that Shanee and her family cherish in Thornwood.
