Troop 81 Celebrates Eagle Scouts at Annual Ceremony

Zachary Brady Richard and Charles Hayden Baxter McIlvaine

On Thursday, June 6, 2024, the Topsfield Spirit of Adventure Council's Troop 81 gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of two scouts who achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. The event took place at the Topsfield Town Meeting Hall auditorium and was attended by parents, community members, and local officials.

The evening commenced with a welcome to parents by Senior Patrol Leader Robert Connelly, followed by an opening ceremony and a blessing from Rev. Martin Riekert.

The Eagle Court of Honor formally recognized Zachary Brady Richard and Charles Hayden Baxter McIlvaine for their significant achievements. John King, a Troop 81 committee member, presented the awards.

Zachary Brady Richard, the son of Sharon and William Richard, earned his Eagle Scout rank on June 12, 2023. His Eagle Scout Service Project involved restoring and improving Topsfield's Town Beach at Hood's Pond. Zach and his team of volunteers dedicated approximately 100 hours to build a new lifeguard stand and enhance the beach area. This project reflected Zach’s appreciation for the beach and its importance to the community.

Charles Hayden Baxter McIlvaine, son of Dolly and Doug McIlvaine, achieved his Eagle Scout rank on May 13, 2024. His project benefited the Congregational Church of Topsfield, the troop's sponsor. Charlie and his volunteers constructed a large patio on the southern lawn of the Emerson Center, transforming a space previously occupied by an old oak tree stump. This extensive project took over 200 hours and now provides a new venue for church events and community gatherings.

The ceremony featured presentations by several distinguished officials, including Massachusetts State Senator Bruce Tarr, Massachusetts State Representatives Kristin Kassner and Sally Kerans, and Topsfield Select Board Member Rafael McDonald. These officials presented certificates of commendation and letters of congratulation from Governor Maura Healey, Representative Seth Moulton, and Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey. Closing remarks were presented by Scoutmaster Ben Bollinger.

Since 1976, Troop 81 has seen 225 young men earn this distinguished honor. Nationally, fewer than 5% of scouts attain the rank of Eagle, highlighting the exceptional nature of this accomplishment.

The event concluded with a closing ceremony and refreshments, allowing attendees to celebrate the new Eagle Scouts. The evening showcased the hard work and community spirit of Troop 81, as represented by Zachary Brady Richard and Charles Hayden Baxter McIlvaine.
