How long have you participated in your sport?
Drew: I have played Baseball since I was 4 years old, starting in Tee-ball.  I have played tackle Football since 3rd grade and played many years of flag football prior to tackle.
Paul: I began playing organized baseball at the age of 5, but my parents tell me I was swinging a bat at age 2. My first playing experience was with Middleton Little League. My goal in baseball is to play for as long as possible. In the future, I hope to become a high school baseball coach so I can teach kids to love the game like I do!

What do you like most about baseball?
Drew: There is so much strategy behind the game.  When you reach high school, you learn the game at a different level.  Both baseball and football challenge me both mentally and physically.  Life lessons are learned on both fields.

Tell us about a favorite memory.
Drew: I'll never forget winning the Super Bowl in 6th grade.  Our team played together for many years leading up to that win, and I still get to play with many of them today!
Paul: I started my first varsity game my sophomore year of high school. I had played a few innings in blowout games that year but had never started. Before a JV game in May, I got a text from the varsity coach telling me I was going to start a varsity game at an important NEC conference game in Danvers, under the lights, that could determine whether or not we made the playoffs that year. Coach Baril told me he only needed me to pitch 2-3 innings. In the first inning, I let one run score. With two outs and two baserunners on, a Danvers player hit a hard line drive back to me. I snagged the ball, and that gave me the confidence to finish three innings without allowing another run. At the end of three, I signaled to my dad that I was done, but the coach put me back out and said I would pitch until I allowed another baserunner. It wasn't until the seventh inning that I walked a batter with one out, and the reliever took the mound. We won that game 8-1. I still have that game ball displayed in my bedroom.

Who is an inspirational mentor in your sport?
Drew: I have been lucky to work with so many amazing coaches, including my father, Coach Barill, Coach Dup, Gardy O'Flynn, James Baker, and many more!  We have a new football staff at Masco starting this season, and I'm looking forward to working with them!
Paul: Coach Dan Bandar is a close family friend and has coached me in numerous sports throughout my childhood. He taught me to stay relaxed on the mound and keep my composure even in high pressure situations. He is like a second father and I can't thank him enough.

Who are your sporting heroes?
Drew: I've always loved Mookie Betts. He is incredibly talented and fun to watch. Gronkowski was also a favorite of mine. His personality and love for the game, along with his talent, made Patriot games extra fun.

How do you balance school and sports?
Drew: I use my time during the school day as efficiently as possible in order to keep up my grades while balancing practices, training sessions, workouts, and games.
Paul: I have to remember that I am a student first. Time management is key!

Have you traveled anywhere with baseball?
Drew: With club baseball, we travel around a lot. Most of the venues are local to NE, including playing at URI, Boston College, and many other college fields.  This summer, I am traveling to New Jersey and Georgia for tournaments.

What awards/honors have you achieved?
Drew: NEC All-Conference, Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association (MBCA) State Select All Star; Mass Baseball Coaches Association State Select Most Valuable Pitcher - Sophomore class

What have you learned from participating in sports?
Drew: My biggest learning so far has been controlling the mental aspect of being a pitcher and quarterback. Once you can overcome the pressures of the big moments, you can focus on the task in front of you.
Paul: With hard work, anything can be accomplished. Throughout my career, I have consistently been on lower-level teams, and I was doubted by some coaches. By putting in countless hours at the gym and at practice, I have overcome any challenges.

Advice for future baseball players?
Drew: If you love the game, keep at it, and don't give up.  Nothing is more important than the bonds you create with your teammates.  I know the memories made with my friends will stay with me forever.  Win or lose, the experience with friends will never be forgotten.
Paul: Work hard, even when it is difficult and you don't want to!
