Where/why did you get your pet?
We worked with American Black & Tan Coonhound Rescue in November of 2019 to adopt our girl while she was being fostered in Tennessee. At the time, we lived in North Carolina and had suddenly and tragically lost our youngest hound Daisy, who was only five years old the month before. Our hearts were grieving and Maisy needed a loving forever home. It was a win-win situation. Maisy was malnourished and had a very bad case of worms. She had never been in a house (other than her foster) and was not at all trained. It was certainly a process for her to get used to all that entails being an inside dog but she had so much fun playing with Sarah and Connor and our other rescues Lola and Shiloh!!
Is there a story behind the name of your pet?
As previously mentioned, Maisy came to us shortly after we'd lost our rescue Daisy who was a Treeing Walker Coonhound rescue. We wanted a different name but something similar to remember Daisy and the story of how we'd come to adopt Maisy.
Anything special or unusual about them (talents/quirks)?
Maisy has several talents people tend to observe. She loves to talk and sing loudly and with abandon as she moves about her neighborhood and guards her home. She calls out to all of her friends to wish them well and let them know she's on top of scoping out TI. We know the guards really appreciate Maisy as they offer her treats when she's on walking patrol. Another talent is her skateboarding ability. Sarah loves skating Maisy around the pond loop on Lanterback. Maisy runs at her top speed and Sarah holds on for the ride of her life! It's quite a sight seeing an 85 pound hound running at such a fast pace with a girl squatting down on a skateboard!! Needless to say, Maisy does not stop for treats on these excursions. She is all business and focused on her run. Many don't know this about Maisy but she is a pool diva! She goes swimming after her runs (or walks) and has been known to take 6 plus 'dips' per day. We go through a lot of towels drying this big girl off. The salt cell is evidence of her daily swims!
What do you like best about your pet?
We love how Maisy is such a big personality. She is spunky and yet oh so mellow.
Any funny stories?
On one occasion, Maisy must have gotten out through the mangroves in our backyard. We actually didn't realize she was MIA until we saw her on our doorbell video waiting to be let in.
How has your pet enriched your home/family?
Maisy has brought us so much joy! She's also taught us patience as she was an adult pup learning to potty train, learning to walk on a leash, and learning how to interact with people and her canine family. Her transformation didn't happen overnight and took a good deal of time for Connor, Sarah, Matt, and Susan to help her, but she has been totally worth it. She is such a unique and strong-willed dog with a heart to learn and to please her family. She's been a blessing to have in our Laughlin pack!
Anything else you'd like to share?
We'd love to encourage people who like a particular breed of dog to seek out rescues for that breed. There are so many dogs that need homes for a variety of reasons. You can find the dog of your dreams in a rescue!
