Meet Your Neighbor and ARB Committee Member, Dan Sweeney and his family

Happily married for 41 years, Dan and Jane Sweeney and have three grown children.  Two of their children, Katelyn and Brendan, live with their families in Carmel, while their youngest daughter, Meghan, and her husband reside in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  The Sweeneys are proud grandparents to a five-year-old grandson and three granddaughters:  a one-year-old and three-year-old twins.  Their grandchildren are the joy of their lives, and as Dan says, “Of course there is never a dull moment with that group.”

Dan hails from Ridgewood, New Jersey, and Jane is a long-time Hoosier, having grown up in Auburn, Indiana.  They met at a party in their apartment complex, and although it took Dan some time to convince Jane to go out with him, his persistence paid off, and the rest is history!

In August, Dan retired after a distinguished career in commercial real estate, where he specialized in drafting, reviewing, and approving multimillion-dollar budgets and negotiated vendor contracts for large construction projects.  He dedicated 12 years as the Property Manager of the Pyramids office complex and spent the last 17 years as a Regional Property & Project Manager for the Hertz Investment Group, overseeing multiple states.  The Hertz Investment Group controls over 20 million square feet of class A office space across twenty-one cities.

Jane retired two years ago from Ascension, St. Vincent where she began her career as an ER and Critical Care nurse.  Her roles evolved significantly over the years, leading her into leadership positions that required Jane to advance her degrees.  Jane believes that even though you may retire from your job, you should never retire your mind.  She lives by this philosophy by continuing to work occasionally for Ascension, facilitating leadership retreats, serving as a career transition coach for a local company, and participating as a member of a teaching team for a Holistic Leadership program at IU Indianapolis.

With a passion for sports, Dan and Jane are season ticket holders for the Colts.  They also attend as many Pacers games as possible.  Both are also big IU fans, but they cheer for the Boilers as well – unless, of course, they are playing IU.  Dan and Jane look forward to their monthly euchre parties that have been going on for over 25 years with their long-term friends.  Dan’s hobbies include golf, HOA involvement, and spending time with his family and grandchildren.  Jane’s interests include reading, practicing patience while learning golf, and volunteering.

In the last year, Dan and Jane’s oldest daughter and her family moved back from Chicago and purchased their family home here in Carmel.  The Sweeneys knew they wanted to stay in Carmel and live close to their families. They also dreamed of living on the water, a vision that seemed unrealistic until they found their current home.  From the moment they saw it, they knew it was the one!  They feel especially blessed each day as they look out on the water, which provides a calming appeal.

Their home is perfect not only for its serene location but also for its proximity to family.  Their daughter’s family lives just seven minutes south, while their son’s family is seven minutes north.  They have truly found their “sweet spot.”

The Sweeneys have enjoyed meeting their new neighbors and have really appreciated their welcoming presence.  The neighbors even organized a “meet your new neighbor” night when Dan and Jane first moved in.  Being quite social, they look forward to connecting with more residents in Waterstone.

Jane has previously served on various community non-profit boards.  Currently, she is involved with the Called to Care program, which supports clinicians, patients, and families at Peyton Manning Children’s hospital.  In September, she started dedicating time to read to the babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

While dedicating his volunteer time to the ARB and Lakes Committees here at Waterstone, Dan also enjoys attending the Waterstone Board meetings to stay informed.  Now that he is retired, Dan has the time to give back to his community.  With a long career in commercial real estate management, hiring architectural firms, and analyzing construction drawings, serving on the ARB Committee seemed like a perfect fit.  Dan says, “I am excited about living in Waterstone, and this is one way I can help keep Waterstone a premier community where people want to live.”
