CASA - Court Appointed Special Advocate
Linda Lee along with her granddaughter.
In 1992, a friend of Linda Lee's invited her to volunteer as a hostess for the Christmas Home Tour benefitting Child Advocates of Fort Bend. It was that single moment that hooked Linda on the idea, and soon she was trained as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). CASA serves as "the eyes and ears of the child directly reporting to the judge." Linda began CASA during its infancy stage in 1992, and over 10 years she represented about 9 children, from ages newborn up to 16. During those years, there of those cases had severed parental rights, and the children were happily adopted by other families. Between 5 and 6 were able to be reunited with their families.
There are a couple cases Linda had that stand out to her as being interesting. The first was a case where she went up against legendary Houston Defense Attorney Dick Deguerin. The case was settled and the family was reunified. The second case that stands out to her was one that consisted of abuse, court appearances, and adult advocacy.
"I truly believe everyone should volunteer as an advocate; your background doesn't matter," Lisa says with heartfelt expression. "The burnout rate of advocates is high, and they always need as much help as possible." Linda Lee was Child Advocate of the Year in 1998!
The CHRISTMAS HOME TOUR is December 9-11, 2022. Tickets are available at www.cafb.org/event/2022-christmas-home-tour/
