Unveiling the Secrets of Fruit Sandos

Elijah McCall, our esteemed Editorial Recipe Specialist, brings you a delightful dish with a rich history – the Japanese Fruit Sandos. Originating from Japanese coffee shops in the early 1920s, these sandwiches were a staple in fruit parlors across Japan.

Ingredients:
  • Milk bread
  • Whipping cream
  • Vanilla extract
  • Sugar
  • Fruit of your choice (classics include oranges, strawberries, and kiwi)
Preparation:
  1. Prepare the whipped cream by combining 2-4 cups of whipping cream with sugar in a large bowl. Use an electric whisk to beat until stiff peaks form (approximately five minutes).
  2. Add 1-3 teaspoons of vanilla extract to the whipped cream and mix well.
  3. Trim the crusts off the bread slices using a sharp knife.
  4. Spoon whipped cream onto one slice of milk bread.
  5. Arrange the fruit diagonally across the bread slice.
  6. Top with another slice of milk bread and gently press down.
  7. Wrap the sandwich in plastic wrap, ensuring it's semi-tight. Draw a line across the wrap in the direction of the fruit placement.
  8. Cut the sandwich in half, remove the plastic wrap, and enjoy your delicious Japanese Fruit Sandos!
