Faith, Family, and Fitness: The Horn Family's Recipe for Life

The Horn family, who have resided in Teays Valley all their lives, and have called Scott Depot home for 3 years, have built a life filled with love, faith, and a passion for health and fitness. John-John and Rachel Horn, along with their energetic 4-year-old son, Judah, and their playful 2-year-old Labrador, Beasley, are making a difference in their community while embracing family traditions and staying true to their roots.
John and Rachel’s love story began at Winfield High School, where they first met. While they dated other people back then, fate had a plan. “We’ve known each other for 19 years,” Rachel shared with Stroll Winfield. “Nine years ago, we reconnected over our shared love for fitness, health, and nutrition. We worked out together at the same gym for two hours a day until John finally asked me to be his girlfriend. The rest is history!” The Horns tied the knot six years ago this July, and their bond has only grown stronger.
Their passion for fitness and nutrition led them to launch their business, HungryHorns, a healthy meal prep service that caters to the Teays Valley, Barboursville, and Charleston areas, with nationwide shipping as well. Rachel’s journey inspired their venture. “I lost 100 pounds postpartum by eating food I enjoy,” she said. “That experience fueled our heart to create HungryHorns, so we could help others on their health journeys too.”
Family life in the Horn household is filled with love, laughter, and plenty of activity. Judah keeps them on their toes with his boundless energy and curiosity. At just four years old, he already shares his parents’ love for travel and has even requested a trip to New York City, which the family is planning.
Faith plays a central role in the Horns’ lives. They attend Bridge Church every Sunday and volunteer actively within the church community. Their hobbies also include Bible studies, traveling, and cooking together, blending their love for fitness with their passion for delicious food.
The Horns make time for family traditions that keep their bond strong. Every Christmas, they toast with a mimosa, and on Thanksgiving, they enjoy a skinny margarita in honor of Rachel’s late grandmother. John is an avid fan of the Atlanta Falcons.
Their favorite vacation destination is North Topsail Beach, NC, where they visit annually. They also travel frequently to places like New York City, Chicago, St. Lucia, and the Grand Cayman Islands, though they find themselves drawn to Lexington, almost every month for a relaxing getaway.
When it comes to dining, the family enjoys their own HungryHorns meals daily, but for a special treat, they love visiting Bridge Café and Bistro or Belknap Dough Company. For date nights, DT Prime is a favorite spot. Despite their health-conscious lifestyle, the Horns are unapologetically hooked on watching trashy reality TV shows together, a quirky pastime that adds humor to their busy lives.
Community involvement is important to the Horns. Through HungryHorns, they not only serve the valley and beyond with healthy lunches and dinners but also donate meals to those in need. “Helping others is at the heart of what we do,” Rachel shared.
Reflecting on life in Scott Depot, Rachel noted, “Our favorite part of living here is that we’re close to everything and everyone. We love seeing our neighbors and being part of such a supportive community. We know if anyone ever needed anything, there would be help ready and available. It is also the best place to raise a family.”
Whether they’re working out together, volunteering at church, or enjoying a glass of wine while playing UNO, the Horns embrace life with gratitude and joy. Be sure to say hello to this inspiring family if you see them around town—they’re always ready to share a smile and their love for their community.
If you have not tried HungryHorns meals you owe it to yourself to do so.
