The Laughery Family: A Pillar of the Winfield Community

The Laughery family residing in Scott Depot has been a vibrant part of the Winfield community for years. Mike and Mary Beth Laughery, along with their three sons, Tanner, Toby, and Ty, have made significant contributions through their involvement in various activities and sports.

Mike, the Operations Manager for CAMC LabWorks for the past eight years, oversees more than 30 offsite laboratory locations. Mary Beth, a Pediatric Occupational Therapist, has worked as an independent contractor with WV Birth to Three for 23 years. She works with babies at risk for developmental delays and serves as an Ambassador for NBCOT(National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy), representing West Virginia.

The Laugherys have deep roots in St. Albans, where Mike and Mary Beth grew up and graduated from St. Albans High School. Mike graduated from Marshall University with a Master’s in Health Care Administration in 2001. Mary Beth graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy in 2000.

Mike and Mary Beth have been married for 21 years and have known each other since childhood but didn’t start dating until after college. Their oldest son, Tanner, is 19 and just completed his freshman year at West Virginia University, majoring in Pre-Med Biology with plans to attend dental school. Toby, 17, is a junior at Winfield High School, and Ty, 15, just finished his freshman year at WHS.

The family loves sports, especially football, basketball, baseball, and golf. Recently, pickleball and frisbee golf have become popular in their household. They enjoy traveling and have a small cabin on the New River, where they spend the spring and summer months hiking, fishing, kayaking, and paddle boarding. During the winter, the boys love snowboarding in Canaan Valley.

"We try to go somewhere different every year for vacation so our kids can experience different destinations," Mary Beth shared with Stroll Winfield. Some of their favorite vacation spots include Destin and Captiva Island in Florida, and Hilton Head, South Carolina. This summer, they’re excited to travel out west to the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, and Moab, Utah, where they will raft the Colorado River and visit three national parks. They also maintain a tradition of going to Canaan Valley for Thanksgiving every other year, a cherished family ritual from Mary Beth’s childhood.

The Laugherys are passionate supporters of all Winfield sports teams. Over the years, their boys have played numerous sports in Winfield, and WVU sports are also a family favorite. Mary Beth has a particular love for UK basketball.

Mike enjoys grilling and experimenting with new recipes at home, while Mary Beth loves baking her mother’s chocolate chip cookies, often sending them back to school with Tanner for him and his roommates. The family values sitting down together for meals as often as possible.

In the community, Mike has coached Winfield sports for over a decade, including youth basketball, baseball, and football. He currently serves as an Assistant Coach for the Winfield High School Boys Basketball team and previously coached at Winfield Middle School for four years. Mike also spends many evenings maintaining the Winfield High School football field year-round. Mary Beth has served on the Boys Basketball Boosters for the past four years and enjoyed volunteering at their sons’ school when they were younger.

Their sons are equally active. Toby plays football and basketball for Winfield High School. Toby was named First Team All-State 2023, First Team All-Conference 2022 and 2023, and All Kanawha Valley 2023 in football.  In basketball, he was named Second Team All-Conference in 2022 and 2023. Recently, West Virginia University offered Toby a Preferred Walk On for the 2025 football season. Ty currently plays football, basketball, and baseball for Winfield High School.  This spring, his baseball team won the Sectional and Regional Championship, advancing to the State Tournament.  Tanner, Toby, and Ty are lifeguards at FMC during the summer. When Tanner was in high school, he played football and basketball.  He plays intramurals at WVU.

The Laugherys moved to Johnson Place in March 2015, after living in Murrells Inlet South Carolina for a short period. “Before that, we built our home in Castleknock subdivision and lived there for 5 years, Mary Beth shared.

"When we moved back from South Carolina, we chose this neighborhood because of all the children that lived here who were friends with our boys," Mary Beth explained. “At the time there were not any homes for sale, but our realtor put a notice in everyone’s mailbox to let them know that she had a family very interested in buying a house in this neighborhood and that is how we ended up with our home. We loved that our boys could play easily with their friends and enjoy getting together with other families in the neighborhood. The Winfield community has always been dear to our hearts, and we are so thankful to be a part of it."

The Laughery family's deep involvement in their community, their dedication to each other, and their interests make them a cherished part of our community.
