A Life of Love and Music: Meet the Ruby Family

Nestled in the heart of Scott Depot’s Colonial Oaks neighborhood, the Ruby family has been a cornerstone of the Teays Valley community since 2018. Josh and Christy Ruby, high school sweethearts who first crossed paths in a waiting room at Thomas Memorial Hospital, while both of their grandmothers were being admitted, have built a life filled with love, music, and strong family traditions. Their three sons—Jordan (24), Caleb (20), and Aaron (11)—along with Jordan’s wife, Grace, round out this vibrant family.

Josh and Christy’s unique story began in 1992 when Christy boldly wrote her phone number on Josh’s hand after hours of conversation. “That day, I told my Maw-Maw I had met the boy I was going to marry,” Christy fondly shared. True to her word, the two were married in 1996 and have been inseparable ever since.

The Rubys have deep roots in the community. Josh and Christy are the owners of BRAVO Live DJ, the Tri-State’s largest mobile DJ company. Performing 200 shows annually, BRAVO specializes in weddings, corporate events, and fundraising galas. “Running BRAVO is a labor of love,” Josh shared with Stroll Winfield. “Most people don’t realize the countless behind-the-scenes hours we pour into our weekends, but seeing people celebrate and have a great time makes it worth it.” Josh continued, “While we do “work from home” these days, it’s common for us to have an 80-hour work week! Having a home office usually means the work never stops… and there’s a ridiculous amount of behind-the-scenes work that goes into pulling off 6-10 DJ performances on a busy weekend!

The family shares a love for music, attending concerts including Eric Clapton, Elton John, Chris Stapelton, and Kid Rock. Their first concert together? Bobby Brown at the Charleston Civic Center in 1993. “We have a pretty eclectic taste,” Josh said with a laugh.

The Rubys’ love for tradition defines their family. One of their most cherished is cutting down a live Christmas tree every year, always on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. “No fake trees in this house!” Christy said with a smile. “We spend the day decorating, eating Husson’s Pizza, and watching a Christmas movie together.” Birthday celebrations are equally special, with Christy baking her famous yellow cake with chocolate icing—a recipe inspired by Josh’s grandmother.

For family dinners, the Rubys prioritize time together, often gathering for salmon patties, taco soup, or Josh’s grilled specialties. “Sunday family time after church is a must,” Christy noted. “With everyone’s busy schedules, those moments are priceless.”

Their three sons each bring unique passions to the table. Jordan, recently married to Grace, works as a teacher at Teays Valley Christian School and shares his dad’s love for basketball. Jordan has also been on quite the health journey this last year, and through nothing more than proper diet and exercise, has lost approximately 120 pounds since his wedding in July 2024.

Caleb, a 2023 graduate of Winfield High, spends his time outdoors fishing for largemouth bass and searching for the elusive trophy Muskie. He currently works in construction/home remodeling. Caleb has been dating his girlfriend Lacie since 2022.

The youngest, Aaron, attends Eastbrook Elementary and has developed a love for boxing, inspired by his hero, Rocky Balboa. Aaron takes boxing lessons at Camp DC Boxing in St. Albans.

The Rubys are passionate about the Teays Valley community. “We’re fortunate to live in an area that values family, safety, and growth,” Josh shared. “We’ve made lifelong friends here, and there’s truly no better place to raise a family.” Christy added, “We stay involved in our community, but the way that looks has certainly evolved over the years. When the kids were younger, most of our time was spent on youth sports, school, and church activities.  Josh coached youth football, baseball, and basketball in Hurricane for about 10 years. Now that the kids have moved on from that, we spend most of our time involved in BNI (Business Networking International), Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, Charleston Area Alliance, and other business-building activities.  We attend First Baptist Church of Hurricane as often as possible, but a busy work schedule doesn’t allow for us to be as regular as we would like to be.”

As far as family vacations the Rubys shared with us, “In more recent years, we’ve fallen in love with Pensacola Beach, FL. We started taking “couples only” vacations several years ago, once the kids were old enough, and it has been a game-changer for our marriage. We still try to take a “family trip” of some kind every year… and we’re scheduled to go to Pigeon Forge, TN with the entire family this year. When the kids were younger, we always used to take family vacations to Pawley’s Island, SC. We loved the famous “Hammock Shops” and always stayed at Litchfield Beach Resort.

When asked what they do to relax, Josh and Christy agreed on evenings on their back deck, complete with music, a fire, and the occasional cigar. “It’s our little slice of peace,” Josh said.
The Ruby family embodies what it means to love deeply, work hard, and stay rooted in their values. Whether through their business, traditions, or time spent with loved ones, they continue to make a meaningful impact on the community they call home.
