Cheer, Softball, and Success: The Life of Kenlie Zigmond
Kenlie Zigmond, a senior at Winfield High School, has called the Beacon Hill Subdivision home for 13 years. She shares her home with her parents, Natalie and Kenny Zigmond, and her younger sister, Kallie, a seventh grader at Winfield Middle School. Natalie, a pharmaceutical sales representative, also coaches the Winfield High School cheerleading team, while Kenny, also in pharmaceutical sales, serves as the WHS softball coach. Kallie is active in track and equestrian riding, adding to the family’s love for sports and teamwork.
Kenlie, 17, is the embodiment of a driven student-athlete. A cheerleader since age seven and a softball player since five, she credits her parents for inspiring her athletic journey. “I got started in cheerleading because of the influence of my friends and my mom’s background in the sport. Although my mom, a former college cheerleader and coach at Marshall University, never pressured me, her passion for cheerleading inspired me.– My dad got me into softball by introducing me to the sport at a young age. He’s always been passionate about sports, and when I was five, he encouraged me to try softball, his support and enthusiasm for the game helped spark my love for the sport, and from there, I kept playing and improving year,” Kenlie shared with Stroll Winfield.
Over the years, Kenlie has achieved numerous accolades. In cheerleading, she is a three-time WV State Champion, with her team earning both Traditional and Game Day titles in 2023 and 2024. In softball, Kenlie contributed to back-to-back WV State Championship wins in 2023 and 2024. “Winning state championships in both sports has been the highlight of my high school years,” she said. “These moments are unforgettable and a testament to the hard work and support of my teammates.”
Kenlie is also deeply involved in school activities. She’s a member of the National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, FCA, Key Club, Pep Club, and Lunch Bunch. Despite her packed schedule, Kenlie maintains balance through careful organization and time management. “Prioritizing my time is key,” she explained.
Kenlie shared what makes her unique, “My strong work ethic and determination to improve
drive me to push past challenges, and my positive attitude helps keep the team focused and
motivated. I’m committed to both individual growth and team success, which makes me an asset in any situation.”
After graduating from WHS, Kenlie plans to attend Marshall University to study health sciences, with aspirations of becoming an occupational therapist or physician assistant. She also hopes to continue cheering at the collegiate level.
Kenlie’s inspiration comes from her grandmother, Wilma Zigmond, who has faced cancer with strength and resilience. “Mamaw Wilma’s positivity and courage during her battle have taught me the importance of staying strong no matter what life throws at you,” Kenlie said.
From winning state titles to maintaining academic excellence, Kenlie exemplifies dedication, resilience, and hometown pride. “Winfield has given me so much—memories, friendships, and opportunities. I’m grateful for everything and excited for what’s next.”
