Mia Duterte: Winfield High School’s Dual-Sport Star

Mia Duterte, an 18-year-old recent graduate of Winfield High School, has left a lasting legacy in both soccer and track. Growing up in the Castleknock Ridge neighborhood in Winfield, Mia is the daughter of Keefe and Sarah Duterte, She has a younger brother, Evren, who is entering the 3rd grade, while her older sister, Nais Acevedo, 24, also played soccer at WHS.

Mia's athletic journey began at a young age. "I have played soccer ever since I was 6 years old because that has always been my family’s sport," Mia shared with Stroll Winfield. She found her passion for track during her freshman year, inspired by upperclassmen who saw her potential. Over the years, Mia has excelled in both sports, playing outside mid in soccer and specializing in hurdles for track. At the State Meet, she competed in the 100 high hurdles, 300 hurdles, Shuttle Hurdle Relay, and 4x4 relay.

Mia commented, "My favorite thing about being on a team is the relationships I built throughout the years and the lesson it taught me about the importance of each person.”

Mia's dedication to soccer has earned her numerous accolades, including First Team All-Conference, First Team All-Region, and Second Team All-State honors. She was also invited to play in the North versus South Game. In track, Mia's achievements are equally impressive. At the 2024 State Meet, she secured first place in the Shuttle Hurdle Relay, second place in the 300 hurdles, sixth place in the High Hurdles, and eighth place in the 4x4 relay.

Reflecting on her high school sports career, Mia highlighted the importance of hard work and perseverance. "The harder you work in practice, the better you will perform in games and meets," she emphasized. This philosophy has not only led her to individual success but also to unforgettable team victories. "My favorite moment of my high school sports career is winning the Shuttle Hurdle Relay at the State Meet. There was no better feeling than doing that with my teammates," she recalled.

Beyond her athletic prowess, Mia is focused on her future. She plans to attend West Virginia University (WVU) and pursue a career in Occupational Therapy. Her experiences in sports have undoubtedly equipped her with the resilience and determination needed to succeed in her chosen field.

For those considering a foray into sports, Mia offers a valuable piece of advice: "You don’t have your best day every day, so never give up."
