Scholar, Athlete, Leader: Sydne Alexander’s Inspiring Story
For the past 12 years, Sydne Alexander and her family have called the White Pines neighborhood home. Sydne, a 17-year-old senior at Winfield High School, is on the brink of an exciting new chapter in her life. She recently achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the prestigious WV Scholar scholarship to West Virginia Wesleyan College.
"I don’t think I have ever witnessed something so heartfelt and pure," Sydne shared with Stroll Winfield. "The whole experience was just amazing, and I enjoyed getting to know a few of the other finalists for the scholarship. In the end, I can say I am so blessed, and I cannot wait to use it to make the world a better place!"
Sydne’s family, including her parents Nichi and Derek Alexander, and her 15-year-old brother Jaxin.
At WHS, Sydne has distinguished herself not only academically but also athletically and artistically. A dedicated soccer player, she has been a member of the Generals soccer team for four years and has played travel soccer since she was five, competing for WVFC and EESA. Her passion for soccer was ignited by her aunt Jade Smith Lewis and uncle Drue Smith, who often played and trained with her.
"I love the competitiveness of soccer and the many friendships I have made along the way," Sydne says. Her hard work and dedication to the sport have earned her numerous accolades, including being named All Kanawha Valley Freshman of the Year and Region 4 Player of the Year in 2023. "Several of my coaches have always said that I am a leader on and off the field and that I am a very versatile player," she notes. "Having these strengths is important for the game of soccer." Additionally, she will be representing her community as Miss Winfield during her senior year.
Sydne’s talents include being a part of Winfield High School’s show choirs, General Admission, and Emerald Elegance. She previously danced at Kelle Boggs Dance Studio for over 12 years. She also competed in gymnastics at Bozhi’s Gym Nest for two years.
Sydne manages to balance her busy schedule with impressive focus and determination. "I had to learn at a young age how to prioritize," she explains. "If I have important tests or presentations, I am focused on that. If I have a soccer game, that is my focus. I am very good at shifting my focus when it is needed."
Sydne is excited about her future at West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she plans to play soccer at the collegiate level and pursue a degree in medicine by majoring in Health Sciences. "After college, I will attend medical school and ultimately become a pediatrician," she shares.
A significant source of inspiration for Sydne has been her aunt Jade, who played soccer at West Virginia Wesleyan and is now a nurse practitioner. "Ever since I was a little girl watching her play soccer at West Virginia Wesleyan, I have always looked up to her," Sydne says. "She has motivated me in millions of ways, whether it be for soccer or even academically.”
As Sydne prepares to embark on this new chapter, her family, friends, and community can take pride in her achievements and the bright future that lies ahead.
