Celebrating Growth and Achievement: PCTC Graduated Over 300 Students
The Putnam Career and Technical Center (PCTC) celebrated a significant milestone at its graduation ceremony held on May 23, 2024, at the West Virginia State University Arena/Walker Convocation Center. This year, PCTC proudly graduated over 300 students, including those who completed their programs last year and are now also graduating from high school. The impressive number of graduates highlights the substantial growth and success of PCTC since its inception.
PCTC’s journey began in the mid-1960s when the board of education acquired the building that would become the heart of career and technical education in Putnam County. By 1968, PCTC welcomed its first cohort of students, offering a welding program to about 20 aspiring welders. This humble beginning laid the foundation for what would become a significant institution in the community.
Over the years, PCTC expanded its offerings significantly. From a single welding program, it has grown to include more than 23 diverse programs, catering to a wide range of interests and industries. This expansion is a testament to PCTC’s commitment to providing valuable, hands-on education that meets the evolving needs of students and the job market. Programs now include fields such as healthcare, information technology, culinary arts, and automotive technology, reflecting the center’s dedication to comprehensive career readiness.
The remarkable growth of PCTC has brought about positive challenges, particularly in accommodating the increasing number of graduates and their families during the graduation ceremonies. Initially, these events were comfortably held at the school itself. However, as the number of graduates swelled, it became necessary to seek larger venues. Over the years, the graduation ceremonies moved from the school to the Armory in Eleanor, then to Valley Park, and now to the prestigious Arena/Walker Convocation Center at West Virginia State University.
This year's graduation ceremony was a significant milestone, not just for the graduates but also for the institution. The choice of the Arena/Walker Convocation Center as the venue underscores the importance and scale of the event. It provided a fitting backdrop for the celebration of the students' hard work, dedication, and achievements. The ceremony was attended by proud family members, friends, faculty, and community leaders, all gathered to honor the accomplishments of the graduates.
The graduates of PCTC are well-prepared to enter the workforce or pursue further education. The practical skills and knowledge they have acquired through their respective programs equip them to meet the demands of various industries and contribute positively to their communities. The success stories of past graduates who have gone on to excel in their chosen fields serve as an inspiration to the current cohort.
As PCTC continues to grow and evolve, it remains a beacon of opportunity for students in Putnam County and beyond. The institution’s commitment to excellence in career and technical education ensures that it will continue to play a vital role in shaping the futures of many young individuals.
The 2024 graduation ceremony at the West Virginia State University Arena/Walker Convocation Center was not just a celebration of individual achievements but also a testament to the enduring legacy and impact of the Putnam Career and Technical Center.
