Meet Toby Laughery: A Rising Star with a Bright Future

Toby Laughery, an 18-year-old senior at Winfield High School, is the son of Mike and Mary Beth, and has two brothers, Tanner (20) and Ty (15). The Laughery family also includes Lily, a Miniature Goldendoodle, and Rip, a Miniature Schnauzer.

Toby plays football and basketball for WHS. When he was a 3rd grader, he convinced his parents to let him play football. “My parents were hesitant at first,” Toby shared with Stroll Winfield, “but once we moved to Winfield from South Carolina, they gave in. I’ve been hooked ever since.”

Toby has made a name for himself both on and off the field. His accolades include First Team All-State Football and All-Kanawha Valley honors during his junior year, among many other recognitions in both football and basketball. Yet, Toby’s favorite part of sports goes beyond the accolades. “I’ve learned so many life lessons through sports,” he shared. “The relationships I’ve built with my teammates and coaches are what mean the most to me.” Toby reflected on his success on the gridiron, “l think my size, strength, speed, and football IQ, have combined to help me be successful throughout my football career. I am determined and have a strong work ethic which has contributed to my success.”

Toby balances a full schedule of academics and extracurriculars. A member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, he is equally committed to his studies. Toby’s leadership extends to Link Crew, where he mentors incoming freshmen, helping them navigate their first year of high school. He also gives back to the community, volunteering with youth sports teams, food pantries, and Habitat for Humanity projects.

Toby shared, “Juggling work, school, and sports can be challenging at times. Time management is key. I strive to be productive most of the day so that I can get everything done that needs to get done.”

One of Toby’s most cherished memories is his time spent at his family’s cabin on the New River, where he learned to fish, explored waterfalls, and bonded with loved ones. “I have also enjoyed going to Canaan for holidays and learning to snowboard there." More recently, he had an unforgettable experience waking up at sunrise at the Grand Canyon. “It was way earlier than I wanted to wake up, but it was definitely worth it. The views were incredible, even in 110-degree heat!”

Toby plans to attend Marshall University, where he will play Tight End for the Herd while pursuing a degree in accounting through the business school.

His determination and work ethic have been instrumental in his success, qualities he credits to role models like his former coach, Ron Arthur. “Coach Arthur always encouraged us to be the best version of ourselves,” Toby said. “His outlook on life, always seeing the good in adversity, has inspired me to embrace challenges and grow from them.”

Toby Laughery embodies the values of perseverance and service. As he prepares for the next chapter of his life, Toby looks forward to making an even greater impact, both on the football field and beyond.
