Q&A with Troy Lane, Knockout Custom Pools
Question:Hey Troy how are you doing today?
A: Fabulous, currently in the mud-hole of a pool.
Question: The one thing that fascinated me when I first met you is how well you built up this pool business without doing any marketing. Personally, I’m a fan of well-done marketing, but you had $2 million in sales in 2023 solely by word of mouth. Is that correct?
A: Yea, I had a couple TikToks that went viral but I doubt those led to any actual sales. In fact, I just now this month finally got a website up. (QR code here)
Question: How’d you get the name Knockout Custom Pools?
A: My whole family comes from generations of boxers and I’ve been around it all my life, officially beginning to compete at age 14. I also like the double-meaning that the pools we create are a knockout.
Question: What made you want to build pools?
A: I saw there was a lot of shadiness in the pool industry, and a lot of people working were really general contractors. The best ones back in the day were real pool guys that started at the bottom and came up. My mentor was one of those OG’s that could build and talk every aspect of the pool. That’s how you get a good product that you deserve for the price you’re paying. I spent many years as the pool boy learning the trades from the inside out. And now I try to keep a small team, being on site personally for each job.
Question: Would you say that’s what separates you from the competition?
A: Yea that’s the same answer. I want someone to enjoy every aspect of their pool. I want it to last so it’s got to be easily serviceable, and aesthetically pleasing as well and efficient.
Question: What do you mean by efficient?
A: A lot of people think pools are expensive to run and they don’t have to be. If done properly, you can save a lot of time and money on a monthly basis, which will lead to a pool you enjoy more often and longer.
Question: Great to chat
A: Yep you too.
